JSConf | Open Labs Hackerspace (Albania) by Mariana Balla |Community Lounge | JSConf EU 2019 @jsconf_ | Uploaded 4 years ago | Updated 11 hours ago
Mariana comes from a community called Open Labs Hackerspace, based in Albania (https://forum.openlabs.cc/). She joined them at first as a volunteer on the annual open source conference the community organizes for the past 6 years (https://osc.al). As an introvert person it came as a surprise to her how warmly they welcomed her and started advising and mentoring her in order to learn more about the Open Source philosophy. At Open Labs she learnt many new technologies (using Linux systems, getting in touch with more programming languages, be aware of security/privacy issues, etc) and all of these through presentations and workshops the members were holding. The OL community has more than 70% members who are women, which makes it an exception in tech communities globally. She strongly believes that many of the skills that she has now are a result of her engagement with this community.
