As an American one thing that comes across as exotic about Poland, is the fact that the country is made up of its own people. Unless you’ve grown up in a homogeneous society like that, its difficult to imagine.
But Whats more difficult to imagine, after spending some time in Poland, is the fact that this place was once a diverse part of Europe, famous for accommodating outsiders and immigrants. Most notably, were the Jewish people who actually lived here for hundreds of years. As I’ve previously pointed out, the tragedies of war left many literally visible scars on Poland, but in the case of Jewish Poles, these wounds is not so obvious, in that for many people its simply hard to see something which has completely vanished.
With the most powerful evidence of a murdered society being ash mixed with dirt in the former Nazi concentration camps, I wanted to explore to see what other remnants had been left behind, so I headed to Kraków to see what I could find.

I once knew the owner of an English school in a small Polish village and she once told me a disturbing story. She claimed that her business was almost destroyed because she had a Halloween party the previous year. Basically, the local priest told his perish that anyone who attended the school was a heretic and that all saints day was the only thing real christians could observe. I was confused because Halloween is about eating candy and dressing up, no American I had ever met treated it as a religious day, it had nothing in common with All saints day.
A few years later I was invited to Polskie Radio Jedynka to debate a priest on the topic, when I told him that for me ghosts and monsters are fictional he exclaimed that for satanist they are real, which was probably one of the most ridiculous things I had ever heard. Anyways, the truth is that I don’t believe most Polish people would believe that Halloween had anything to do with religion, but to be sure, I hit the streets to ask people directly their feelings on the matter.

My last trip to the place where 3 borders collide was a failure. I could not stand at three states at the same time because of legal issues, so this time I decided to go to the place where three EU countries meet. As they are in a Schengen zone I have the possibility to make it without breaking the law. Also, on my road I rayed a visit to one more old tripoint Three Emperors Corner - where three previous Empires once met. Three Emperors Corner (Polish: Trójkąt Trzech Cesarzy, German: Dreikaisereck, Russian: Угол трёх императоров) is a former tripoint at the confluence of the Black and White Przemsza rivers, near the town of Mysłowice in the present-day Silesian Voivodeship of Poland. From 1871 to 1918, it marked the border between the Russian Empire, Austria-Hungary, and the German Empire.
