I suppose the ultimate TL;DR for this video:
Just because an idea is spawned outside of academia this does not mean it is instantly wrong, although there is a lot of junk out there on the web. Just because an idea is spawned inside academia and peer reviewed, this does not instantly make it correct. There are certain areas of academia that are very questionable in their motivation and can be quite cronyistic.
Academia and peer review is great and mostly a very helpful tool but it's not the be all end all of research and is subject to its own flaws. We have the technology to analyse all manner of data points and pool the expertise of anyone and everyone's relevant skills to produce amazing results. I suppose you could call it an open source, free market academia. Just a hypothetical thought.
The internet is a wonderful tool that could be used to unlock, share and create so much knowledge and yet some people are scared to do so and in some cases out right dismissive and/or angry when someone outside academia should try to create something new, to present a new hypothesis, a different philosophy or just a new way to look at something.
