Deep in the Australian outback, people spend their lives searching for stones that serve no purpose beyond beauty.
In Opal Fever, we enter the remote mining towns of Kupa Piti (Coober Pedy) and Andamooka — isolated communities built around obsession, survival, and the dream of discovering something extraordinary beneath the earth.
In temperatures reaching 50°C (122°F), residents live underground, mine through the night, and remain tied to a landscape many would never endure. Some arrive chasing opals. Some never leave.
But beneath the search for precious stones lies something more universal: humanity’s endless attraction to beauty, meaning, and escape.
