updated
Werner Herzog is one of the most influential filmmakers to emerge from the New German Cinema movement and has been a creative force in filmmaking for over 40 years. Known both for his startling vision in feature films such as "Fata Morgana," "Heart of Glass," and "Nosferatu" and his total commitment to realizing his vision, Herzog increasingly turned to documentary filmmaking in the 1990s and 2000s with critically-acclaimed films such as "Little Dieter Needs to Fly" (1997) and "Grizzly Man" (2005). His more recent work includes his latest documentary "Lo and Behold," which is about the internet and features Elon Musk, Lawrence Krauss and others.
Jeffrey Sachs is a world renowned professor of economics, leader in sustainable development, senior UN advisor, bestselling author, and syndicated columnist whose monthly newspaper columns appear in more than 80 countries.
Lawrence Krauss is an author, professor, physicist, public intellectual and host of The Origins Podcast with Lawrence Krauss, as well as director of the Origins Project Foundation, a non-profit focused on celebrating knowledge, skeptical inquiry, and creativity through science and culture.
The actors and production team recall memories of their first day filming the Lovecraftian indie movie, INTERSECT, which went to #1 in iTunes Horror upon it's release.

This dialogue is associated with a closed scientific workshop in partnership with the National Institutes of Health held to spark discussions of big, unanswered questions on how the brain and machines process patterns, aimed at understanding consciousness, intelligence, and madness.
This on stage discussion focuses on the humanity of madness, revealing Depp's experience and creative method as an actor who has portrayed such eccentric fictional and nonfictional characters as Edward Scissorhands, Hunter S. Thompson, Captain Jack Sparrow, and John Wilmot, Second Earl of Rochester while exploring and unraveling the intricate links between creativity and madness.

“Today, the danger of some sort of a nuclear catastrophe is greater than it was during the Cold War and most people are blissfully unaware of this danger.” –William J. Perry
What do advances in modern warfare mean for national and international security? What challenges face humanity in the nuclear age? How will advances in autonomous weapons change the security landscape? Join former U.S. Secretary of Defense William J. Perry and Origins Podcast host Lawrence Krauss for this discussion of national and international security, nuclear policy, and the challenges of modern warfare.
Dr. William J. Perry is one of the world’s leading authorities on U.S. Foreign Policy, security and defense, with distinguished careers in business, government and academia. Following a variety of early senior Defense Department appointments, he served as the U.S. Secretary of Defense from 1994 to 1997, but his career in defense began long before. In 1962, Perry was called on to advise then-president John F. Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis, having worked for a decade already in electronic reconnaissance and surveillance of Soviet weapons. Today, Perry works to reduce the nuclear threat, a calling that was first inspired by his days in the Army Engineers in war-devastated Japan, where he witnessed first-hand the destruction of modern warfare. Trained as an engineer and mathematician, he holds appointments at Stanford University and is the creator of the William J. Perry Project, which aims to engage the public on the role of nuclear weapons and prevent their further use.
Dr. Lawrence M. Krauss is the director of the Origins Project Foundation. He is an internationally-known theoretical physicist with wide research interests, including the interface between elementary particle physics and cosmology, focusing on the origin and evolution of the universe and the fundamental structure of matter. Since 2006, Krauss has served as Chair of the Board of Sponsors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, the organization that annually resets the famed Doomsday Clock, most recently on Jan 25th of this year.

The ASU Origins Project is a transdisciplinary initiative that nurtures research, energizes teaching, and builds partnerships, offering new possibilities for exploring the most fundamental of questions who we are and where we came from. Much of the most exciting research being done today involves exploring questions of origins. We foster the origins work being done across Arizona State University, recruiting distinguished faculty and generating relationships that explore the most complex, profound questions facing humankind today. Every year we host a number of international workshops which gather the world's top researchers from a variety of fields. At the same time, the ASU Origins Project works to raise the profile of origins-related issues and broaden scientific literacy through curricular initiatives and public discussions. Our efforts aim to create knowledge, improve education, and raise public awareness on key issues with the ultimate goals of helping solve pressing global problems, improving quality of life, and informing the development of sound public policy.

The authors will also discuss their new books. Dawkins recently published The Magic of Reality: How We Know What's Really True, an exploration of the magic of discovery embodied in the practice of science. Written for all age groups, the book moves forward from historical examples of supernatural explanations of natural phenomena to focus on the actual science behind how the world works.
Krauss's latest book, A Universe from Nothing: Why There is Something Rather than Nothing, explains the scientific advances that provide insight into how the universe formed. Krauss tackles the age-old assumption that something cannot arise from nothing by arguing that not only can something arise from nothing, but something will always arise from nothing.
Founded in 2008, the ASU Origins Project is a university-wide transdisciplinary initiative aimed at facilitating cutting edge research and inquiry about origins questions, enhancing public science literacy, and improving science education. Since its inception, the Origins Project has brought the world's leading scientists, including Nobel Prize winners, to Tempe to explore origins questions. The Origins Project has hosted workshops and public events that have focused on questions as fundamental as the origin of the universe, how life began, the origins of human uniqueness, and the origins of morality.
