The Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) has been awarded an additional USD 220 million by NSF for another five years of ocean data collection.
OOI is a coalition of oceanographic research organizations, including Oregon State University. CEOAS scientists at OSU operate and maintain the Pacific Northwest coastal component of OOI, called the Endurance Array. Deep profile moorings, shallow profile moorings, and gliders collect data on ocean temperature, oxygen, light levels, and more.
The data collected by OOI help answer critical climate change questions. At the OOC in Corvallis, scientists and technicians perform maintenance on the instruments and prepare the buoys for the next deployment. The additional funding from NSF will allow this work to continue for the next five years.
OSU also manages the OOI Data Center where all of these data are stored. The Data Center will be vastly expanded over the next five years.
