The rap group Onyx emerged in the early 1990s with Fredro Starr, Big DS, Suave, and B Wiz.
Tragedy struck when B Wiz was killed in a drug-related incident. Soon after, the group crossed paths with Jam Master Jay, which led to Sticky Fingaz joining the lineup. Onyx signed with Jam Master Jay/Def Jam Records and shook up hip hop culture by introducing slam dancing through their breakout single “Slam.”
The track became a massive hit, selling millions of records, landing the group on a national tour with Snoop Dogg, and opening the door to merchandising deals. Yet with fame came personal struggles: Fredro Starr’s long-term relationship ended, Sticky Fingaz started dating a Def Jam executive, Suave’s brother was sentenced to 75 years in prison, and Big DS decided to leave the group.
Despite facing internal challenges and a heated rivalry with another rap crew, Onyx achieved a major milestone in 1994, winning the Soul Train Award for Best Rap Album with “BACDAFUCUP.”
