The Dead walk among us.
It was we who put them back on their feet.
We needed someone to cultivate our fields and sweep our streets.
The world as we knew it is long gone.
We all expected a nuclear war, an epidemic, or even an apocalypse to be the end of us. They never came. Rather, for reasons still uncertain, our population shrank. Suddenly fewer and fewer births, paired with higher and higher death rates brought our population to its knees. No simple answer to our population decay. We simply began to shrink.
The decay started around 2020 and in less than thirty years we lost centuries of growth. No more civilization, no more transportation, no more cell phones — just darkness.
Survivors formed communities, barricading themselves behind the walls of makeshift fortresses. Outside the land is reclaimed by nature. Mankind fell to an apocalypse of harmless and quiet ruin. Not with a bang, but with a whimper.
In the end, the dead that come back to haunt us were of our own creation.
