The earliest church fathers called non-trinitarians, Monarchian. It was not until the 1900's that a Trinitarian scholar called the earliest Christians, Modalist. Where Adolf Von Harnack got this definition we don't really know. There are no writings from Noetus, Praxeas, or Sabellius. So Harnack took the accusations of Trinitarians against Oneness and made up his dumb definition. One that contradicts Scripture and makes God out to be limited.
