Oneiros is an absolutely fantastic experience that falls on blind eyes: It’s realistic yet mysterious approach to world building, the bright color palette, ways in which the story progresses, transitions through-out the journey, comedic moments, strategic methods regarding puzzles, and enjoyability from beginning to end. All of it together paints a journey...of a man, created by Coal Valley Games.
This new endeavor for the creator’s developmental journey, was a way for the developer to branch out. After years of experience as a game developer, he always felt the need to make a story-driven game, so in 2018, he started production. After two years of hard work, on March 27th, 2020, Oneiros was public for the world to see...or...not...see...
With barely any high quality reviews on steam, currently 29, or in general, currently 2, it saddens oneself when one finds such an amazing experience that not many individuals get the chance to equally share the creative encounter. The simplistic answer as to why Onerios isn’t more well known is either because of lack of simple marketing or because this game was created by Coal Valley Games, a one-man studio, that has no games to their name besides Oneiros. Sure, the same person worked on mobile projects, several prototypes for different projects, and tributes, but Oneiros is a different story because Oneiros was a one man band whereas the other projects listed in his portfolio on his website were ones that aren’t necessarily connected to the coal valley brand besides Oneiros.
Since Onerios is so invisible in the marketplace, I implore you to experience it on your own time, rather than watch a dissection of it before you fully experience the beauty that is Oneiros. Not just for spoiler-sake, mind you, but because I want to better support this developer due to the fact that this game deserves more attention, more good reviews, and more people to go on this journey. It’s a wonderful experience, from beginning to end, and the less you know about it, the better of a quest you’ll have. Then you’ll understand why I believe this game...is a 10/10.
