One year ago, the Christopher Street–Sheridan Square station was officially renamed Christopher Street–Stonewall station! The station’s new name commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Uprising, which took place steps from the station and played a major role in the early LGBTQ+ rights movement.
The station opened July 1, 1918 as part of the Dual Contracts with New York City. It was one of a number of new IRT (Interborough Rapid Transit) stations built for the West Side line, which greatly expanded subway service in NYC. Platforms were extended in the 1960s to increase number of cars and rider capacity. The station received a renovation beginning in 1991 and the site-specific artwork Greenwich Village Murals was installed in 1994. The artwork, which portrays the history of Greenwich Village, was created by Lee Brozgol and students at the nearby PS41 elementary school.In 2024, the New York State Legislature voted to rename the station Christopher Street–Stonewall, marking an important milestone in LGBTQ+ history.
