Cervical cancer is a global health problem. Dr. Anne Busisiwe Alaniz, a gynecologic oncologist at Houston Methodist in Houston, TX, joined the January 2025 virtual conference of chapter leaders of the National Cervical Cancer Coalition (NCCC) to share a global perspective, discussing the burden of cervical cancer in Malawi and the challenges in providing comprehensive care there.
Born and raised in Malawi, Dr. Alaniz co-founded Pothawira International, a nonprofit organization, to provide services and care near where she grew up. Pothawira (which means Safe Haven) focuses on serving the community of Malawi by providing healthcare, education, and economic sustainability projects. The campus has a medical clinic, an elementary school, and a home for children who have been orphaned.
