We often lament the loss of heritage in Vietnam. We've just become aware that this historic church in Nam Dinh province, Bui Chu Cathedral (1885) is facing demolition. Bui Chu parish is the location of some the earliest Catholic missionary activity in Vietnam and it continues to be a centre of devout Catholicism with a large number of churches. Bui Chu is one of the oldest still standing and one of the most architecturally interesting too. Reports indicate that the decision to demolish is based on the costs of maintenance and is being driven by the church itself. We hope there is a change of heart. This is one of the most historically significant churches in Vietnam.
