A rare M6.1 earthquake west-northwest of Mantua, Cuba shook parts of Cuba, Florida, and Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. Tremors were reported in Havana, Pinar del Río, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Southwest Florida, Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville, Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. Some Miami-Dade buildings were evacuated as a precaution, but there was no U.S. tsunami threat and no immediate major damage reported. The offshore Gulf quake may be one of the largest ever recorded in the Gulf of America with modern instruments.
