Few horror props are as instantly recognisable as the axe wielded by Jack Nicholson in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980).
This lightweight stunt axe was created for the film’s intense action sequences, giving Nicholson a safer version to swing as Jack Torrance descended into madness throughout the Overlook Hotel. From his pursuit of Wendy to the snow-covered hedge maze finale, the axe became inseparable from some of the film’s most unforgettable moments.
