In this video I’ll show you a simple way to start improvising jazz, blues, and cocktail-style piano without getting tangled up in theory.
It’s what I call ‘two-part improvisation’: one note at a time in the right hand, one note at a time in the left — a bit like Bach’s two-part inventions, but applied to a jazzy chord progression. We’ll build a single-note melody in the right hand, then add the left hand by playing just the root note of each chord.
I’m using the Quartet play-along app (piano/bass/drums/sax) to provide the progression and backing — it’s the third of three sponsored videos I’ve made for Quartet, and it’s genuinely become part of my own daily practice.
