Henry came home from kindergarten a few years ago and announced that he was Jewish.
The discussion went something like this:
Henry: “Mum, why do you love bacon more than God?”
Me: “Because bacon is delicious.”
Henry: “Well, God still loves you but you’re not one of his chosen people.”
Me: “What are you on about?”
Henry: “I’m a Jew!”
Me: “How are you Jewish?”
Henry: “Well I don’t eat ham and I’m circumcised”
Me: “OK, good to know…”
Where did this come from?
I was perplexed. I had no idea where his apparent interest had come from. David and I have a close friend, Eitan who is a very handsome ex-Captain in the Israeli Defence Forces who Henry hero worships, but I still couldn’t imagine that his five-year-old brain had connected Judaism with a veteran of Golan Heights.
So, the week after Henry’s conversion, we attended his play at his wonderful little Christian school. I figured since his father helped start One Nation, poor kid needed all the help he could in getting to heaven. The play was based on the Book of Esther from the Old Testament. And the penny (or the Scheckel) dropped. Long story short, Esther was a Jewish orphan and a slave girl who becomes Queen of Persia, she is kind and wise and prevents the mass genocide of the Jews - it’s an interesting story, well worth a read.
It takes a (Jewish) village
Wanting to help Henry on his spiritual journey we enlisted the help of a number of Jewish friends. They invited the family to Shabbat (Friday night meal with blessings), helped me plan Kosher meals and directed me to learning material such as akhlah.com (The Jewish Children’s Learning Network) and helped me source a Children’s version of The Torah.
