In the series Ephemeral Moments, Shoko Okumura captures the fragile beauty of the moment through natural landscapes. The series is inspired by the Japanese concept of mono no aware, which expresses a deep awareness of the impermanence of the world and a subtle but profound melancholy in the face of the transience of things. The compositions immortalise with poetry and delicacy the fleeting moments of twilight, when light and colour change with each passing moment. Ephemeral Moments is an invitation to contemplate what is about to change – and to find in it, paradoxically, a form of emotional permanence.

Shoko Okumura’s works explore the link between man and nature. Inspired by Shinto beliefs, which regard nature as sacred and inhabited by invisible forces, the artist brings natural elements to life through delicate paintings illuminated by gold and silver leaf. Her paintings celebrate nature as alive and in motion, reflecting a world where every detail carries meaning. By capturing the present moment in ever-changing natural landscapes, she seeks to freeze the essence of the moment. This aesthetic and philosophical approach transforms her paintings into a meditation on time and life.
Born in Tokyo in 1983, Shoko Okumura combines Japanese and Italian artistic traditions. After training in traditional painting in Japan and fresco restoration in Florence, she developed a unique technique combining gold leaf on Japanese paper and pigments from both cultures. Based between Milan and Tokyo, she has been exhibiting in Europe and Japan since 2010 and works in a variety of fields, including fashion and jewellery.
