Even if we’re born again into another life
Before I play this song live I ask the audience who thinks we get more than one life versus who thinks this one life we are in is all she wrote
There’s always some from each category that applaud
But always the one lifers win the contest
When I wrote the song the chorus was just the first line
“Casue we only get ONE LIFE!”
Sung over and over again
It had a power melodically and leaned towards a celebratory message of living this one life to the fullest
That had me congratulating my muse and doing high fives in the mystical parking lot of creative expression.
But then a complaining voice chimed in
And questioned me
He said…
Yeah but is that true? Do you even believe that?
I’m not sure what I believe I said back to this bullying ghost
Trying to negotiate my new hit across the finish line.
But it was too late
Once the question was raised the whole thing had to be readdressed
Joseph Campbell says where you stumble is where you should dig
And where you will find the gold
I kept digging
Casue you only get one life
Even if it’s more than just one life
It might as well be one life
Even if we’re born again into another life
This solved the riddle for me
It had the whole debate
And the debates conclusion in the chorus
And it made me smile because
Not only did it have the strength of the more simple version
But it had something even more important
Humor. A lightness
Even as it danced around the deepest questions of this life
