Why does every skill challenge go like this?

I remember back in highschool I was a GM that wanted my players to cross a river during a storm. They opted to ferry over it on a flying broom and ignore my bogus skill challenge. I told them that was outside of the Flying Brooms "range" and that the PC who had it would have to go across every time and we'd have to measure weight to make sure the broom could support the weight of different party members. I'd like to believe I tamed the demon that did that to his players and now use it for exclusively "good."
