If we're talking underrated anime, then we have to mention Cencoroll (and Cencoroll Connect). It's a sci-fi action movie from 2009 that was nearly singlehandedly written, designed, directed, and animated by manga author Atsuya Uki.

Needless to say, he did a pretty good job.
