The Super Touring Revival returned for its second year at the Oldtimer GP. What started as a growing presence of Super Touring cars in other race series during this historic racing weekend has now evolved into a dedicated celebration, all thanks to the incredible passion of the team behind this initiative but also thanks to all the drivers/owners, given how expensive and complex these 2-litre touring cars are to maintain today. The highlight? Seeing legendary driver Uwe Alzen reunited with his 1998 Opel Vectra STW, pushing the exact car he drove in period right back to its limits on the Nürburgring!
Super Touring, or Class 2, category was defined by the FIA for national touring car racing in 1993 and it was based on the "2 litre Touring Car Formula" created for the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) in 1990. Super Touring replaced Group A as the norm in nearly every touring car championship across the world, but escalating development engine and aerodynamic costs, and the withdrawal of works teams caused the category to collapse in the late 1990s. They were required to be a minimum of 4.20 metres in length, with four doors, effectively requiring a small family saloon car as a minimum. No more than 2 litres engine capacity, maximum of six cylinders were permitted, and the engine was required to be naturally aspirated. Cars had also to retain the drivetrain layout of the road car they were based on so both two-wheel drive (both front and rear) and four-wheel drive cars were allowed. Super Touring formula was used in most national championships with different names: Super Tourenwagen Cup (shorten STW) in Germany, Campionato Italiano Superturismo in Italy, Championnat de France de Supertourisme, Australian Super Touring Championship and so on. It's no wonder it was the true Golden Era of touring car racing!
The Vectra received its dose of Super Touring energy starting from 1990 in the British Touring Car Championship, fielded as a Vauxhall Cavalier. It then underwent several evolutions that followed both the restyling and updates of the production Vectra but also the improvements and modifications of the category over the years. The Vectra in this video is chassis RV010-99/L, built by Opel Performance Center and originally used by Uwe Alzen in the 1998 ADAC SuperTourenWagen Meisterschaft, fielded by Opel Team Holzer, and then by Roland Asch in the 1999 ADAC SuperTourenWagen Meisterschaft with team Irmscher Sport. It's powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine built by Spiess Racing and it's able to produce around 315hp and rev up to 8,500 rpm (limited by Super Touring regulation). The engine is linked to an X-trac 6-speed sequential gearbox. With this exact car Alzen finished third in the 1998 championship behind Johnny Cecotto and Laurent Aïello. The car is bow in the good hands of Füller Motorsport.
