Marine organisms influence the ocean's ability to store huge amounts of carbon dioxide, but current climate models are not fully accounting for their impact. The NERC-funded BIO-Carbon programme is helping us gain a new understanding of the role of marine life that is needed to make more accurate predictions of future ocean carbon storage.
In September 2024, scientists and crew set sail on the RRS James Cook for the programme’s Autumn expedition. PhD student and science communicator Arianwen Herbert joined the expedition, speaking to other scientists along the way about their groundbreaking work and how it will allow the next generation of climate modelling to correctly account for how marine life is helping the ocean store carbon.
This journey builds on the Spring expedition which saw scientists spend 37 days at sea onboard the RRS Discovery. Now, the team return to the North Atlantic, south of Iceland to continue their work.
