On this day in 1976, USS Constitution led the Parade of Tall Ships up Boston Harbor as America marked its Bicentennial.
“Old Ironsides” fired minute guns to welcome international vessels from around the world, including Queen Elizabeth II’s royal yacht, HMY Britannia. The following day, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip came aboard USS Constitution, welcomed by Commander Tyrone G. Martin.
It remains the only time a sitting British monarch has ever stepped foot on the decks of Constitution.
