Rights in imperialist countries give the working class the 'freedom' to protest and the ruling class the freedom to ignore them. 2 million people marching against the Iraq War sent a clear message to the Labour government, but it made not a jot of difference as British imperialism continued its plunder of Iraq. Social democracy isn't set up for us, the workers. It's set up for the ruling class to give us the illusion of democracy.
Communists opposed the Iraq War. But communists aren't pacifists – we oppose unjust imperialist wars of plunder, but we SUPPORT just wars of resistance against imperialism in the same way as we support working-class uprising against the ruling bourgeois class.
Our slogans for the Iraq War continue to be applied to other imperialist conflicts today:
Victory to the resistance! No cooperation with imperialist war!
