Henry David Thoreau (July 12, 1817 – May 6, 1862) was vehemently anti-slavery and refused to pay taxes to the State. Thoreau has been directly credited as an major source of inspiration by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Ghandi, and President John F. Kennedy.
Originally titled "Resistance To Civil Government", this work was later published as "On The Duty of Civil Disobedience". The current title causes some confusion -- Thoreau was not a "pacifist"; when he said "civil disobedience" he did not mean 'polite' or 'peaceful', per se, ---but rather disobedience against civil authorities. Thoreau was an outspoken supporter of John Brown.
