This is an edited clip from the Hartlepool film about the closure of the shipyards in 1962.politically passionate Jack Ashley was one of the first working class reporters at the BBC. He wanted to show the suffering caused by high unemployment.
The edited clip shows the impact of unemployment on some of the young men at the time. It's worth noting, that when the shipyards closed in 1962,one male in nine was signing on the dole. 40 people were chasing every job vacancy in the town.
One of the main concerns of these young men, was not being able to afford to take a girl out or buy one record a week.
