I moved here to study French linguistics and to become fluent in French...which happened when I met a French guy at the Erasmus night at Mixclub. That long-distance relationship lasted six years. I would come back twice a year for a few months to visit him…and now in 2019, seven years later, I feel like I can say I'm definitely qualified to answer questions about Paris. I have lived a decent amount of time here, in various arrondissements, and I have seen the many sides of Paris (hanging with French people and also hanging with other Americans/international people here). There is no “proving yourself” or much back-and-forth with a consulate or La Préfecture. I studied abroad in Paris for an academic year in 2011-2012, and the entire visa process was not nearly as complicated. I visited the consulate in the USA once, and my passport was sent back to me via mail. Upon arrival, I do remember having to schedule an appointment at the OFII (Office Français de l’Immigration et de l’Intégration), where you will undergo a medical physical (It was not like an American physical...I remember the French doctor asked if I read and I was like…umm?).
