Just some deleted scenes from our Omnichunk Minecraft adventure, plus an explanation of how the Omnichunk mod works under the hood. It gets a little technical, but I thought this might interest some people.
The mod is still not perfect, but the performance is generally good (until you destroy a block that supports a torch, as you probably saw in the original video). If you teleport to a brand new area it can also take a while for the master chunk to get applied to all the chunks, but this process takes place in batches so it won't lock up the game.
The mod also takes care of some other complications that I didn't explain in this video. For example, when you place a Bed, you are actually adding 2 blocks to the world. When either of these gets broken, we have to take care to remove BOTH of them from the master chunk, otherwise you would end up with a bunch of half-beds scattered throughout the world.
Another thing I didn't explain in this video is that the list of changes is condensed whenever you overwrite a block. So if you place a Dirt block, then destroy it and replace it with a Stone block, the master chunk will only register 1 change. This means that the master chunk will never contain more than 65,536 changes (one per block position).
