Welcome to Part 8 of our Oman series, covering our 1 month 4x4 camping road trip around Oman in February and March 2022.
In this penultimate episode we leave the coast behind and drive hundreds of kilometres inland to the Rub al Khali, otherwise known as The Empty Quarter. This is the world’s largest continuous sand desert, covering huge areas of Saudi Arabia, Yemen, the UAE, and Oman. Without a back up vehicle or a whole lot of experience driving in sand, we were cautious about heading too far into this remote, vast desert. But, after a lot of research on satellite view we decided to aim for a couple of spots on the southern fringes of the Rub al Khali that we felt confident we could access via hard-packed and/or graded tracks without too much risk.
Our first destination is Ramlat Jadilah (Ramlat Jadaylah), supposedly the world’s highest sand dune at 455 metres. We camp at the foot of this impressive dune, climbing up it at sunrise when the temperature is cool. The wind is whipping off the dune by the time we near the top, stinging our eyes and skin and making it impossible to walk (or film!) directly into the wind. The views are incredible though, the desert stretched out before us and our car and tent just a tiny speck in the orange sand far below.
Next, we cut across tracks heading east and enter the desert north of Fasad to pick another wild camp spot for the night. Following sandy tracks to the base of an attractive dune, we settle down for the night, enjoying the view from the shade of the car boot until the temperature cools enough for us to wander the dunes.
