The Occupational Health and Safety Section (OHS) of the American Public Health Association (APHA) honored Omana George with its 2018 Leslie Nickels International Health & Safety Award. Ms. George has been a leading organizer and promoter of occupational health and safety in Asia since 2002, coordinating activities with worker organizations throughout the region, including trade unions, worker centers, women’s and human rights organizations, and victim rights groups. Ms. George is the coordinator of the Occupational and Environmental Health Asia Monitor Resource Center (AMRC). She has also been an instrumental contributor to the Asian Network for the Rights of Occupational and Environmental Victims (ANROEV), a network of grassroots organizations in more than 20 countries and territories in Asia. The mission of both organizations is to increase the OHS knowledge, skills and confidence of worker and victim organizations, to build independent labor movements across Asia, and to empower workers to speak and act for themselves in promoting their health, safety and rights on the job and in society. The award is named for Leslie Nickels (1953-2017), who used her training as an educator and industrial hygienist to advance social justice for disenfranchised workers. It recognizes individuals and organizations with outstanding achievement in the field of OHS outside the United States. Ms. George was recognized at the OHS Section’s awards luncheon on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at the San Diego Convention Center, during the APHA’s 146th Annual Meeting & Expo from Nov. 10-14, 2018.
