Composed by Neil Moret (the pen name of Charles N. Daniels, 1878-1943), the song was published in 1901 as "Hiawatha (A Summer Idyl)", but only became popular when it was re-published in 1903 as "Hiawatha (His Song to Minnehaha)", with additional lyrics by James J. O'Dea (1870-1914).
