Although Roe v. Wade (1973) codified legal abortion at the federal level, many Americans (including those in liberal cities) had very little real access to abortion and other reproductive care. In this video, Dan Schneider, a poet and writer who grew up in New York City during the 1960s and 1970s, describes the reality of back-alley and illegal abortions for impoverished women. He contrasts the experiences of local teenagers and prostitutes with that of wealthier women, and discusses a pro-life Republican “family values” politician notorious for rape and forced abortions.
