1. Babies are born with an instinct to not soil or wet themselves, their sleep space, or you (hello: all mammals!). When they are only able to soil in a diaper, it doesn’t feel right at a core level (hence why so many babies have “colic”).

2. Humans need privacy to have a bowel movement. It is instinctual and sanitary and supports sphincter health. Being forced to poop in front of others (in a diaper) is socially dysregulating.

3. Carrying around a heavy bag of old pee all day is dysregulating in and of itself. You literally can’t get away from it, it just follows you around! No wonder where hyperactivity and tantrums are rooted.

4. Montessori wrote that when children develop in alignment with nature’s design (or God’s design depending on your belief), their behavior is more even keeled, more regulated, “normalized.” She wrote that the sensitive period for toilet learning is 12-18 months and they use cloth trainers from 12 months and up in their classrooms.

5. Potty training is a gift a parent gives to the child - one of trust, dignity, autonomy, and respectful love. It instantly helps toddlers self-regulate!

6. The toddler’s number one developmental task is individuating. (I do it myself!!!) This obvi supports that 😅

7. It is marketing BS from the diaper companies that parents should wait for signs of “readiness” to toilet train - meant to sell more diapers! 92% of American toddlers were completely done toilet training by 18 months old in 1957, even preverbally!

8. Potty training “early” won’t psychologically damage your child…waiting til after 2 or 3 might! All babies of all human history were not damaged by being trained at birth. Duh.

K so let’s help our toddlers regulate:
