Join Catie Witt, PhD candidate in Egyptology at the OI, for a mini crash course on Egyptian hieroglyphs. Learn the basics of the Egyptian hieroglyphic writing system, then put your skills to the test translating real artifacts in the OI Museum. By the end of this two-part series, you’ll understand some of the principles of reading Egyptian hieroglyphs and will be able to recognize key hieroglyphs and phrases that show up on the Egyptian artifacts in many museums. Bring a pencil and paper to take part in this virtual Zoom workshop.
Part 2: Reading the Ancient Writing on the Wall
Take a virtual visit to the OI Museum and translate names on ancient Egyptian artifacts, then translate the Nefermaat stele with us! Take what you’ve learned to create a hieroglyphic work of art, and after the workshop, explore more with a virtual scavenger hunt through our online database.
