Bobby Shafto | Ohio-Class SSBN Brief Appearance San Diego Bay @bobshafto | Uploaded July 2021 | Updated October 2024, 11 minutes ago.
While recording "Observation #3" of red channel buoys outside San Diego harbor, I had an unanticipated witness to a rare sight of a "boomer" ballistic missile submarine making the approach to the Bay.
It performed a rendezvous with a pair of tugs out around buoy #10, performed some crew and cargo exchanges and then motored out again, disappearing around the point.
San Diego is homeport to some Los Angeles-class attack subs (SSNs) but the guided and ballistic missile boats are much more secretive and rarely seen, much less right up close near Ballast Point.
