Dashboard camera video shows two males trying to fill a stolen car with gasoline before they led Parma officers on a chase that ended in a crash in Cleveland, police said.
The pair broke into Parma garages and cars early Tuesday August 14th 2018 to search for gas to fill a 2003 Chevrolet Impala reported stolen earlier in South Euclid, police said. They led officers on a brief chase before they crashed the stolen car about 12:40 a.m. into a pole on Broadview Road at Tate Avenue in Cleveland.
The driver ran away after the crash and has not been found, police said. Parma firefighters extracted the passenger, a teenage boy, from the car before paramedics took him to MetroHealth for treatment.
A Parma police officer was investigating a report of break-ins when he found the stolen Chevrolet on Marietta Avenue near Broadview Road. The driver was standing outside the car with a half-dozen gasoline containers on the ground nearby, the dashboard camera video shows.
The driver got back into the car and drove away. He turned north on Broadview Road and quickly picked up speed, the video shows.
The chase lasted less than 90 seconds, the video shows. The officer lost sight of the car near the Cleveland border, but found it crashed into a pole on Broadview Road at Tate Avenue.
The driver got out of the car and ran away through nearby backyards, according to a police report. He has not yet been found, a Parma police spokesman said.
The police spokesman also could not provide an update on the passenger's condition.
Investigators learned the pair may have broken into several cars and garages in the area of Russell Road. Residents reported prescription pills, gift cards, money, headphones and other items taken from their cars, according to a police report.
The break-ins are still being investigated, police said.
