A portion of Interstate 480 in Cuyahoga County now carries the name of a Euclid police officer who was killed in the line of duty.
Gov. Mike DeWine held a ceremonial bill signing Monday at the Ohio Department of Transportation's Sign Shop in Columbus to formally recognize Senate Bill 334, which designates the stretch of I-480 between Lancaster Drive and I-77 as the "Officer Jacob J. Derbin Memorial Highway."
Derbin, 23, was shot and killed on May 11, 2024, while responding to a domestic violence call. He had been with the Euclid Police Department for less than a year at the time of his death. He was a 2018 graduate of Cuyahoga Heights High School and had served in the U.S. Army Reserve before joining the police force. He was engaged to be married that same summer.
Senate Bill 334 was introduced by state Sen. Jerry Cirino, R-Kirtland, and drew more than a dozen co-sponsors. It passed the Ohio Senate unanimously earlier this year before moving to the Ohio House.
