But what you’re looking at was hand-built by a Navy veteran who passed away inside — and no one found him for days.
Now it sits abandoned, holding onto every piece of the life he left behind.
Hidden beneath the surface of Tennessee, built into the side of a hill, lies one of the most unusual homes we’ve ever explored. It’s off-grid. It’s underground. And every inch of it was built by the hands of one man — Harvey Knoll.
Harvey wasn’t your average homeowner. He was a Navy veteran, stationed at Guantanamo Bay during the Bay of Pigs. He served his country, worked on the railroad, climbed his way through different careers, and eventually built a successful Amway business that let him retire early.
But Harvey didn’t want a normal retirement. In 1991, he began construction on something he had dreamed about for years: a self-sustaining home carved right into the Tennessee hillside. No contractors. No blueprints. Just him, his vision, and a whole lot of determination.
He created a pool room inspired by Elvis’s Jungle Room — wild, bold, and full of life. Later, he filled the pool and transformed it into a peaceful koi pond. Out back, he even built a tiny Victorian home just for his granddaughter to play in when she visited.
But in June of 2024… that chapter ended.
Harvey’s daughter hadn’t heard from him in a couple days. She came to check on him… and found him inside the house — passed away from a heart attack. Alone. Still surrounded by the world he created.
The home has been untouched ever since
