Fleadh Cheoil means feast of music and there is no shortage of Irish traditional music sessions taking place on the streets of Listowel, as well as in the many venues set up for the event throughout the town. While some Fleadh Cheoil attendees appear to be worse for wear, others take the opportunity to buy or sell musical instruments,
The shop counter is the boot of a car and you can bargain for flutes bodhráns, concertinas or any other musical instrument that may take your fancy.
At Listowel Castle, accordion player Breanndán Ó Beaglaoich gives his interpretation of 'Caoineadh Uí Dhomhnaill' ('O'Donnell’s Lament’).
It takes great understanding and heart to play a slow air.
This lament was often played by Pádraig Ó Caoimh (Pádraig O'Keeffe), regarded by many as the greatest fiddler of the Sliabh Luachra style.
Fleadh Cheoil is run by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann. The first Fleadh Cheoil was held in 1951 in Mullingar, County Westmeath.
