Michael Levy | Ode to Apheleia (Ancient Greek Goddess of Simplicity) @MichaelLevyMusic | Uploaded May 2022 | Updated October 2024, 1 week ago.
More new music - for the recreated ancient Greek lyre, inspired by ancient Greek mythology...
In ancient Greek mythology, Apheleia (Ἀφέλεια) was the spirit and personification of ease, simplicity and primitivity in the good sense. According to Eustathius, she had an altar at the Acropolis of Athens and was honored as a nurse of Athena.
The recreated ancient Greek lyre is perfect for evoking simplicity - the minimalistic, elegant purity the lyre offers, captures the essence of this sentiment perfectly. In just intonation, simple, pure intervals plucked with the left hand, such as the 5th and 4th, perfectly frame any modal melody plucked with the plectrum in the right hand.
The lyre featured in this presentation, is "The Lyre of Thamyris", handmade in modern Greece, by Luthieros:
