This is a music video VISUALIZER for the song "Funeral Stairs"
from the Album "Tell Me I'm Not Drowning" by obstacle Null
obstacle Null was created by NiTen Iwato, better known as the Iwato Hyena of iamYork. The sound architect and producer behind ShadowFast, Drown the Riot and the other half of GLASS WALKER
The melody unfolded from a dark ambient corner of my mind—a haunting, hypnotic loop meant to mimic the somber march of time. I composed it, not from inspiration but from a ghosted echo: the dull thud of my grandmother’s head inside her coffin as we descended the steep, icy stairs of a church long forgotten by joy. I was a pallbearer, but in truth, I felt more like a silent mourner in my own funeral procession.
Each steep step reverberated, much like the spiraling chords of this cinematic ambient soundtrack. The sound of her lifeless body shifting in that confined box seemed a cruel metronome, ticking through the circles of life. It was a reminder that our lives are just study playlists for mortality—temporary focus aids before the final note fades.
As I walked, holding the weight of her body and the inevitability of my own descent, I couldn’t help but hear the faint echoes of past seasons. Serene atmospheres where laughter bloomed like wildflowers. Days of glee, where we were blissfully unaware that one day, all we loved would be consumed by time’s grinding loops, leaving only white noise where meaning once thrived.
Now, those cheerful moments are buried beneath cosmic ambience—the soundscapes of decay and acceptance. Life is a series of steep stairs, isn’t it? Each one a year older, each one a little harder to navigate. Each funeral another piece of us boxed away, our souls bound tighter by the growing awareness of our own deterioration.
This track, born from the weight of that memory, is a meditation on those inevitable cycles. It is the post-apocalyptic sound of seasonal depression—the kind that creeps in during quiet mornings and blankets you like the lo-fi fog of regret. It’s a dark ambient hymn to the relentless march of time, an ethereal melody for the tired and the grieving.
Perhaps, when you listen, you’ll hear the echoes too. The faint thuds of inevitability, the haunting pull of life’s circles tightening. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll find solace in knowing we all descend those stairs together.
oN emerged not from grandiose studios or the indulgent sprawl of creative excess, but from the stark minimalism of confined, locked spaces—rooms designed with singular intent, to foster contemplation through the disquieting awareness of one’s own breath. These chambers, scarcely larger than the bodies they contained, served as incubators for soundscapes that mirrored their claustrophobic design. These pieces with an acute sense of restraint, layering textured orchestral swells atop the granular erosion of ambient decay. The compositions were not crafted for passive consumption but for immersion, functioning less as traditional musical arrangements and more as sonic architectures. Each track manifested as an austere corridor, coiling inward, drawing the listener toward the unsettling void at its core.
The work did not merely inhabit the periphery; it occupied space within the listener, synchronizing with the measured rhythm of breath and the quiet tension that exists in spaces where sound, much like time, dilates and contracts.
Escape was neither an option nor an expectation. To engage with it was to surrender, allowing oneself to dissolve into the hollow resonance between notes, where absence held the heaviest weight of all.
