We love eating it at the Mamak (Indian-Muslims restaurant) with roti canai, the Malay word for prata or flat bread. At home, we eat it with rice too.
This recipe is taught to me by Aunty Clara, she cooks this 'kari dal’ (lentil curry) for her family a few times a week. But in this video, I’ve simplified it. Originally she uses dried chillies, fresh red chillies, and milk. I omitted all that. So this dhal curry is not only vegetarian, but also vegan.
If you’re on a keto diet, this is perfect as it’s filling and rich in protein.
But I personally love it for its immense health benefits. The potent spices and rainbow coloured vegetables are so good for our body. The best thing is, you can make it in just 25 minutes!

My family like calls this dish: 'fake char siu'. It's our go-to dish when we don't know what else to cook or short of time. It's so easy. You most probably have the rest of the ingredients in your kitchen.
My mother's confinement lady taught her this dish. Because she had to cook lavish dishes for my mother, the confinement lady didn't have much time to prepare food for herself. So she resorts to simple dishes like this.
This is an easy and versatile dish. You could marinade the pork at night and cook it when you're back from work. If you don't have time to marinade it for long, it's fine too.

Hot and Sour Mustard Green Stew, also known as 'choi keok' (leftover dish) or 'suen lat choi' (sour-spicy vegetable), is supposed to be a poor man's dish.
So not to waste food, leftover meat is cook with mustard green, tamarind, and red chili into a pot of appetising stew.
My family typically makes this after a large festival such as Chinese New Year as there is too much food left. This time, we made it because we happen to have a lot of mustard green in our garden and leftover pork belly.

Malaysians must be serious about their food. We put extra time and effort to cook what otherwise should be ‘instant’ noodles, and created the wildly popular Maggi goreng.
While sometimes I do wonder why I should order a plate of fried instant noodles, all thoughts disappear once it arrived on the table with a sunny-side-up on top. Personally, I love breaking the yolk and have it oozes out to drench the flavourful, fried noodles.
One day, I decided to make it at home and I went into a kitchen of a few mamak stalls to learn. Some stalls use chili paste, light soy sauce, and other curry powder to enhance the taste. At home, I prefer to keep it less salty and add more fresh ingredients.
I promise you this is the easiest ‘Maggi Mee’ goreng recipe you can find. On top of packet of curry flavour Maggi noodles and cooking oil, you only need to prepare 5 other simple ingredients.

In Malaysia, we call our durian popsicle/ ice-cream: durian potong! Literally means ‘sliced durian’.
Though ice-cream, sorbet, and popsicle are different; the general population in Malaysia calls anything sweet and frozen: ais-krim! (ice-cream)
If you hate the fruit, this is a good entry-level food to get used to the taste.
Believe me, I hated durian. But I LOVE durian ice-cream and dodol (sticky Malaysian sweet). Then my palate developed and now I absolutely adore durian!

Chicken Rice Wine is a nutritious stew. It is popularly cooked for new mothers during the ‘confinement' period - where they are told to rest and eat nutritious food (with a lot do-not-dos as well)
In this recipe, my mother uses her red Chinese rice wine. She also uses another alcohol (which I didn’t realise before).
Our Chinese Rice Wine recipe is not salty. It’s rich with flavour from the wine, fragrance from the sesame oil, and savoury taste from the chicken. So delicious!

🥘 ABOUT FISH HEAD CURRY
There are two types of Fish Head Curry in Malaysia: Mamak Fish Head Curry and Nyonya Fish Head Curry. Mamak-style is from the Indian & Muslim community in Malaysia.
Whereas Nyonya is from the Malaysian Chinese community who had adopted the Malay culture.
These two dishes are VERY POPULAR in both MALAYSIA and SINGAPORE. We will cook Nyonya version of fish head curry which is also my favourite!
Restaurants in Malaysia normally serve this in a claypot but you can cook this in a wok, pan, or a pot. In this recipe, I use Garoupa (Grouper/ Kerapu) fish head.
This ONE-POT-DISH is great served with hot rice.
