He’s expected to be charged with second-degree manslaughter later in the day, according to the Manhattan District Attorney’s office.
Federal prosecutors are presenting a straightforward fraud case against Rep. George Santos, and that doesn’t leave the lying Long Island lawmaker much wiggle room, legal experts and former public corruption prosecutors tell the Daily News.
The case against Santos (R-N.Y.) doesn’t delve into the intricacies of campaign finance law, but rather focuses on wire fraud, COVID unemployment fraud and false financial disclosures to Congress — “the bread-and-butter route” to a conviction, campaign finance lawyer Brett Kappel said Wednesday.
Ed Sheeran didn’t commit copyright infringement of the Marvin Gaye classic “Let’s Get It On” with his hit song “Thinking Out Loud,” a Manhattan Federal Court jury found Thursday.
The nearly two-week trial saw Sheeran deny an accusation by the heirs of “Let’s Get It On” co-writer Ed Townsend that the British singer-songwriter stole elements of Gaye’s 1973 soul anthem for his 2014 track.

Convicted sex offender Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years behind bars Wednesday by a Manhattan judge who ignored his rambling call for leniency, the final act in the #MeToo prosecution against the predatory Oscar-winning producer.
The 67-year-old defendant, accused of varying degrees of sexual misconduct by dozens of women in the last three years, was whacked with a 20-year term for his criminal sex act conviction and three more years for rape, with Judge James Burke ordering the sentences to run consecutively. Weinstein had faced a 29-year maximum sentence.
Manhattan DA Cy Vance said he is not disappointed in Monday’s jury verdict that found Harvey Weinstein guilty of only two of the five charges against him.
“This is the new landscape for survivors of sexual assault in America, I believe, and it is a new day," Vance said at in a news conference after the verdict. “It is a new day because Harvey Weinstein has finally been held accountable for crimes he committed.”

Awkwafina’s recorded voice will take over conductor announcements on the No. 7 train over the next week, adding a shot of attitude and humor to Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s passenger messaging.
The Harvey Weinstein defense team called Friday for secret jury selection in the widely-publicized case, insisting the accused sexual predator’s chances for a fair trial were already compromised during the first days of questioning.
Lawyers for the disgraced Hollywood honcho also asked Judge James Burke to boot all 32 jurors who heard a damning remark about Weinstein during voir dire two days ago, and called for all potential jurors to be sequestered and questioned individually going forward. The media and the public would be barred if Burke agrees to the drastic suggestion.
Meanwhile, outside, this group of protestors were chanting against the alleged sex offender.

Jack Randall insists he isn’t fearless.
The 30-year-old zoologist, who left his home in England at 14 to work for the late “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin, has taken up his mentor’s mantle, facing off against nature’s slimiest and scaliest while the rest of us sit at home watching behind covered eyes. But the host of National Geographic’s “Out There with Jack Randall” doesn’t want you to be scared.
“If you don’t understand the animal, that’s why you’re scared,” Randall told the Daily News. “You just have to understand what’s dangerous, understand their behaviors.”
It also helps, he joked, that he’s been bitten by a tarantula before and “didn’t react too badly.”

President Trump is ratcheting up the racism — and Republican leaders aren’t saying a peep.
Trump on Monday falsely accused Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar of being an Al Qaeda supporter while repeating and expanding on his shocking claims that she and three other women of color in Congress should “go back” to their own countries.
“We’re at war with Al Qaeda, and she’s somebody talking about how great Al Qaeda is,” Trump said during an event at the White House that was supposed to focus on promoting American manufacturers. “That was Omar. How great Al Qaeda is...She said you can hold their chest out, you can, ‘When I think of America, huh. When I think of Al Qaeda, I can hold my chest out.’"
The Minnesota congresswoman — who’s one of only two Muslims in Congress — has never voiced support for Al Qaeda, despite Trump’s claims.
The U.S. Coast Guard has released dramatic footage that sees its service members jumping onto the top of a “homemade” submarine alleged to be carrying thousands of pounds of drugs amid a series of seizure operations in the Pacific Ocean.
In the minute-long video released Thursday, a U.S. Coast Guard member aboard the Cutter Munro can be heard yelling demands to a speedy vessel tearing through water nearby. After a brief chase, the Coast Guard boat pulls up alongside the semi-submersible submarine and members again demand that it stop.
When the vessel’s operators failed to comply, Coast Guard members responded by flinging themselves on the roof of the still-moving sub.

The NYPD officer caught on video kneeling on a man’s head with his gun drawn in Brooklyn was trying to defend himself after the man threw cash in the air to whip up a crowd and avoid arrest, the city’s top cop said Monday.
NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill said the tense scene unfolded while police were trying to make an arrest, and the suspect didn’t want to go peacefully.
“This was an arrest they made, or were attempting to make, where an individual decided that as he was being arrested he was going to take whatever cash I assume he had stolen and throw that up into a crowd, creating a chaotic situation,” O’Neill told reporters.
“While that was happening, two other individuals decided that they were not going to let... that person be arrested. There was a physical struggle.”
Texas authorities have arrested a man in a Houston road rage case in which he allegedly shot into another driver’s car, likely setting off fireworks inside and leading to significant injuries to a pair of toddlers.
Alleged shooter Bayron J. Rivera, 18, surrendered to officials with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office and is being charged with four counts of aggravated assault, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez announced Sunday evening.
The incident occurred on the Fourth of July. Gonzalez said it’s believed gunfire hit the fireworks, causing them to go off.

A single night at a popular gay bar on Christopher Street would change everything.
Martin Boyce tells the story of his experience at the Stonewall Inn on June 28, 1969, when a seemingly ignored uprising after a police raid altered the course of history for homosexuals throughout the country.
“I thought this was it, we are going to get it, we don’t have Christopher Street anymore, they’re gonna get us, we’re never going to be able to gather here anymore... we’ve taken a step backward,” Boyce told the Daily News.
“And I was wrong,” he added.
