RigidatoMS - Striking Towards the Opposition (Microsoft MSX Cover, YM2413+AY-3-8910)
updated
Alternate name for this cover: Mario Goes to Agrabah or Super Arabian Nights 64.
Capping off 2022 for my channel is a song made with samples from Super Mario 64, as if I were to make custom Mario 64 music using whatever tool is out there to do that. The percussion was interesting to figure out. To create this cover, I located a sounfont created by PablosCorner and Marc Reuppaire which had samples ripped from Super Mario 64 and its DS port, and then imported them into OpenMPT. I located the instruments I felt were appropriate to use, save them to WAV, and then loaded them up in Furnace. As the N64 had no dedicated sound chip, music and sound were driven by some coprocessor thing, which can be programmed to handle MIDI or various tracked modules. So, I used 16 Generic PCM DACs set to 32006Hz at 16-bit stereo with linear interpolation. I don't know how high the polyphony goes in SM64 during gameplay, so this setup might be a little overkill.

The fourth and perhaps final song in my venture to cover snowy/icy themed songs. This game's soundtrack was suggested to me Ostra Diemgi. Now, this song (and the game's entire soundtrack) may not be what comes to mind when you picture something "snowy" or "wintry" in a game, but Polaris SnoCross does involve the use of racing snowmobiles (as its name implies). This comes from the GBC version of the game, and it was composed by Manfred Linzner (whom most of you might know for composing the Iridion games for the GBA). The game features a kick-fire rave soundtrack that's sure to get you dancing. This track in particular stood out the most to me, and I chose to cover it on SNES. With twice the number of channels available, I added my own personal touches and interpretations to this cover, and I made use of generated wavetables too (as well as Furnace's FM feature for wavetables to create a sort of filter waves in the vein of the Donkey Kong Country games on SNES. They don't match exactly, but I'm content with how they turned out). It was fun for me to interpret this song in my style, and bringing a sort of rave vibe to the console.

Third song in my venture to cover snowy/icy themed songs, this one being kindly suggested by Evolução Gamer. For this one, I decided to take a little break from the SNES and go with its rival system (Sega Genesis), and I thought it would be fun to translate it into the style of Sonic 3 & Knuckles by using the drum samples and FM patches from the game. Since most of the songs in Sonic 3 & Knuckles only have two FM channels panned at all times (usually FM channels 3 and 4), I had to forego my stereo panning shenanigans to stay as faithful as possible to songs found in the game. It was quite fun for me to make something for the first time in this style (even though its something that's done quite often).

Second icy/snowy themed song for 2022 in my channel. This is Frost Man's Stage from Mega Man 8. Since I wanted the song to be close to the Saturn version, I used a mix of samples from the PSX version (ripped with VGMTrans) and Donkey Kong Country. This also meant adding in an additional trumpet backing during the flute's part from the Saturn version, reducing the choir chords down to two channels at that point. Still, it's fun to see what you can do with only 8 channels and 64kb of space to work with.

For the month of December, I'll be covering any snowy or icy themed songs either on SNES or any other system. First off, I decided to cover Peppermint Palace from the 2004 GBA game Kirby & The Amazing Mirror. Since I decided to go with SNES, I thought it be fitting to use samples from Kirby Super Star and Kirby's Dream Land 3. Since the Kirby games on SNES use only 5 channels for the in-game levels (except for Kirby's Avalanche, which is essentially a reskin of Super Puyo Puyo developed by Compile), I decided to also use 5 channels for this cover. This did mean that some instrumentation needed to be cut from the original song, as it reaches seven-channel polyphony at some points.
Also, I still don't have a computer desk yet. Cut hours from my job and a tight financial situation made it quite hard to get one, so I decided to download Corrscope on my Surface Pro and use it there for now, since I thought that I don't want to keep you folks waiting for a new oscilloscope view on my channel. I'll probably visualize the five songs before this one when the new year comes since I'm focusing on snowy/icy themed songs to cover (as mentioned in the previous paragraph).

Furnace allows you to use wavetables on SNES and Amiga. So, I decided to port this song from the 2001 GBA game Mega Man Battle Network to give myself the excuse to try it out on the former, though it's all 50% square waves of varying lengths (maximum length for wavetables on SNES and Amiga is 256) as I wanted it to be as faithful to the original as possible. The samples used here take up less than 10kb of space, allowing me to use a longer delay value for the echo (because the echo buffer must share the same RAM space as the samples, music driver, music data, and some other stuff). Also, I have vague memories of playing either this game or its sequel. I remember not being very good at it (as I'm not good at the role-playing genre), and there was a point where I got stuck at, by which I had no idea how to pass it (I presumably gave up on it). However, the game's soundtrack is awesome.

I recently decided to download various packs of BRR samples from SMWCentral to try out with the SNES system in Furnace (currently available in a development build), including a sample pack from Mother 2/EarthBound. I decided to cover another song from Mother 3 using samples from Mother 2 on the SNES. It isn't a full Mother 2-style cover though. The crash cymbal in Mother 2's sample set isn't quite long enough (playing it at a much lower note makes sound muffled and weird) and its picked bass also had some detune weirdness that caused it to clash with the guitar chords no matter what I did to try and finetune it. So, instead, I used a crash cymbal and fingered bass (which sounds like a picked bass) samples from a sample set that was usually supplied from Nintendo to various developers of the SNES during the first few years of the console's life span (which had also been ripped to BRR). As I've said in my cover of Porky's Porkies, I won't spoil the game's story for those who haven't played it, but (as the song name implies), it rains in the game at a point when a character is likely feeling uneasy while looking for some people who are close to them. This might hit close to home for some people who have experienced such a thing.
Also, this isn't my first SNES tune I created in Furnace. Look out for a song I will upload on my second channel for it.

As you all know, me and my family were displaced from our apartment following Hurricane Ian's passage through my area during the night of September 28 and very early morning hours of September 29. We're now living in a new house, and before we moved in, I began to have an optimistic outlook for our future in the new house. Thus, I gave the song the name.
This is my first legit Sharp X68000 tune, as I previously simulated the single-channel PCM chip (an OKI MSM6258 that plays samples at a fixed rate of around 15600Hz) using one channel of the SegaPCM chip. Furnace supports the OKI MSM6258 chip, allowing one to make legit Sharp X68000 tunes (provided that you set the correct clock rates in the chip configurations). Though I'm living in a new house, I unfortunately lost my computer desk in the flood of the hurricane (thankfully, I kept my computers somewhere safe). So, while I've yet to get a new computer desk, I'll be continuing to use my Surface Pro to make music for now.

Well folks, it's here. You can now make Virtual Boy music in Furnace (currently in a development build). This system offers 5 wavetable channels with one noise generator. It's got the following limitations: You can only have up to five wavetables, and notes can't go lower than D-2. I previously covered this song on FDS for a serverwide Discord community album in 2018 that was canceled, which I decided to use for trying out the Virtual Boy system. It was quite interesting to learn about the quirks and limitations of this system's soundchip (VSU-VUE).

Those of you who follow me on Twitter and on the community tab of my YouTube know about my current living situation, but for those who don't, I'll make it short: floodwater damage from Hurricane Ian left me and family without a home and we are currently living at a hotel for a temporary time. As such, you won't see oscilloscope views on this channel for a while until me and my family find a new permanent residence.
While I'm still at the hotel at the time I uploaded this, I brought my Surface Pro with me so I can continue to do chiptune music. I decided to remake this song from Mother 3 on the NES. Since Mother 3 is a GBA game and this song only uses the GB channels, I thought it be fitting to port this song to the NES. It seems to be a sort of counterpart to the first part of "Pokey Means Business" from EarthBound. In an alternate universe of Mother/EarthBound Beginnings, Ninten and company fight off Porky and his clones. I also saw a playthrough of Mother 3 a few months ago, and was surprised at how dark its storyline is compared to its prequels. I won't spoil the story, but for those who are interested in giving the game a try (a translation patch does exist as it was only released in Japan) or seeing a playthough of it, be warned, as there is a huge tearjerker in both the beginning and end of the game that might tug your heartstrings.

This is a song I covered for server on Discord. The server is based around the SN76489 chip, mainly Sega's clone found in the Master System. However, the server admin did allow folks to cover any song they like using any variant of the SN76489 chip. Some time ago, Game Gear support was added in Furnace, thereby obsoleting SnevenTracker (which had its last update in December 2016), though stereo panning isn't heard in VGM exports (which tildearrow, the creator of Furnace, will address soon). I chose this song to cover. I decided to cover it as how you'd hear it in a typical Game Gear game (no arps, square bass, no noise pulse), and the song translates well to the frequency limits of the chip. I do use a lot of stereo panning here as I do my recent songs, which is probably something I haven't done in any of my Game Gear songs (my last one from 2019 only uses it for a background instrument).

Another revisit of an old cover of mine from 2016. This was one of the first songs I ever covered on Sega Genesis back in August 2016, also one of my first DefleMask songs. At the time I originally made this cover in 2016, I had no idea of ripping samples from games, so I just used drum samples from an iPad music app I used at the time of making it. I recently realized that a different sample is used for the higher notes, whereas I used the same FM patch to represent both the high notes and a sustained low note in the original, so I used one of my string FM patches for the higher notes in this revisited version. This is also my first tune made from scratch using the Fractal driver in Furnace.
What is Fractal?
This is a sound driver for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive created in 2022 by Aurora Fields. The main feature of this driver is having two PCM "channels" in FM channel 6, each having pitch and volume changing. Sample-looping is even supported here, meaning you don't need to have multiple samples or really long samples anymore. This driver also supports sound effects that can be FM, PSG, or samples. The driver also allows you to prioritize CPU time or ROM space. If you're a Sega Genesis/Mega Drive homebrew developer and are interested in Fractal, here is the Gitlab link to this sound driver: gitlab.com/Natsumi/Fractal-Sound
I used Fractal mainly to use the 2xPCM feature to get the second layer of percussion used in the original song, allowing me to eliminate the PSG noise channel used in my original cover from 2016. Of course, panning one PCM "channel" will also pan the other, since both PCM "channels" are done in software in FM channel 6's PCM mode. Still, it's quite a nifty feature. Perhaps I could revisit my Foregone Destruction cover and make it in on the Genesis/Mega Drive as I had originally intended to. By the way, there is a Discord server for Fractal: discord.com/invite/HHA8ZCxtJu

What is Paddles of Nuclear Gunnery?
This is a homebrew game made by DonstaTheMonsta. It is a game that is inspired by the classic game Pong. Unlike Pong, you can move in all 8 directions and includes both a laser and shield power up. The game is set in a far future where neon powers technology, and fighting is a sport. You score points by hitting your opponent's side of the screen, and you can use your collected points for the aforementioned laser power (which costs 10 points) and shield (which costs 5 points and lasts for a short time). Two modes are available: Easy and Existential. There are also in-game modifiers available in the options menu. If you're interested in checking out this game, here is the page where you can buy the ROM for an emulator of your choice or flashcart for your Genesis/Mega Drive console: tinyurl.com/3fu6adkv

Here is the final entry of my fictional Phoenix Sound System series. This is the Phoenix Sound System 1CR. This one is a subset (more specifically, a cost-reduced version, which is what the "CR" stands for) of the Phoenix Sound System 1. Recall that the Sound System 1 has six wavetable channels with one noise generator on channel 6 and four PCM channels with looping capabilities and an output rate of 22050Hz. On the Sound System 1CR, the number of wavetable channels is reduced to four with the last channel still having a noise generator (not used in this cover) and the number of PCM channels have been reduced to two. As the Sound System 1CR is a cost-reduced Sound System 1, the PCM channels have the following limitations as a result: no looping, and all samples play at a fixed rate of 12000Hz (which is also the output rate on the PCM side of the system). The Sound System 1 can softpan on all channels, whereas the Sound System 1CR can only hardpan on all channels. I originally imagined this sound system as two separate audio chips for a fictional 8/16-bit hybrid home console in 2018, which I revisited recently and drew it for the picture in the video.
What is the fictional 8/16-bit hybrid home console in the video?
That is the Phoenix Video Entertainment System. I originally imagined it under the name of "Wavetable Guy Enterainment System" in 2018. When I originally thought of it, I imagined it using a slot for both a cartridge and card (like the Sega Master System). I decided to get rid of the card slot and make it a purely cartridge-based system when I revisited it recently. The specs are as follows: The Phoenix Video Entertainment System features a custom 8-bit CPU running at 8MHz with two 16-bit processors. It has 32kb of RAM and 256kb of Video RAM, and can display up to 512 colors at once from a 1024-color palette with a resolution of 320x256. The console uses the Phoenix Sound System 1CR for audio (which you learned about in the paragraph above this one), and it includes a dedicated sample RAM for loading up to 128kb of samples from the cartridge. The cartridges come with a 2MB ROM out of the box, but with memory mappers and bank-switching, they can be expanded up to 16MB.
With that all said and done, I decided to re-explore this system by covering what is possibly the most well-known song from Street Fighter II. I believe this song has undegone a mematic mutation ever since the game was first released in 1991.

Time to show you all another successor in my fictional Phoenix Sound System series. This is the Phoenix Sound System 3, which has some further upgrades to the Sound System 1. Unlike the last two I showed you, this one I came up with more recently. The Sound System 3 features 8 FM channels with specs similar to the YM2151. The 8 wavetable channels+two noise generators from the Sound System 2 return here, and there are now 8 PCM channels that can output a rate of 44100Hz. Because of it having eight wavetable channels, it is naturally backwards-compatible with the Sound System 1 and 2 (songs from the Sound System 1 will have its wavetable channels mapped from 2 to 7 on the Sound System 3, due to having 6 wavetable channels with one noise generator). The FM channels can only hardpan while the wavetable and PCM channels can softpan. I explored this system by covering this song by FΛDE. FΛDE makes some awesome tunes, I recommend checking out his stuff: youtube.com/channel/UCfEc9gVcVFzme4apjQaai6A

Another GBAesque cover. This time, I used six Generic PCM DACs set to 12000Hz at 8-bits instead of SegaPCM to simulate the DirectSound portion of the GBA's soundchip (I imagine the six PCM channels I used here would get mixed down to two, one for the left and right speakers). This is a song I've been wanting to cover since 2018. I remember wanting to cover it on PC Engine that year after listening to Michirin's cover of Cloudman from the same game. As was typical of me at the time, I thought there weren't enough channels (I didn't think of a clever way of incorporating drums and hats into one channel like Michirin did in her cover of Cloudman). Samples from the original song were used except for the bell, bass, square, and hats (which are handled by the GB channnels). I also used a steel guitar sample in place of what looked like scratchy sample in OpenMPT's sample editor. This is also my first tune to make use of software envelopes on the GB channels (introduced in a recent development build of Furnace), which is otherwise known as "Zombie Mode." This makes it possible to change the volume of these channels (especially the pulse channels) without an audible pop.
Also, I may not be a huge Mega Man fan (coincidentally, Mega Man 7 was the last Mega Man game I played, which was back when I was kid around 16 to 17 years ago. I likely played it in a Mega Man compilation pack for my GameCube), but I think Slashman might be my favorite robot master along with Metalman. Which Mega Man robot master is your favorite?

In my last video (as well as a video I put up earlier this year), I showed you all a fictional sound system I came up with in 2018, which has 6 wavetable channels with one noise generator and 4 PCM channels to output a rate of 22050Hz. I also imagined a successor to it in the same year. Previously called the "Wavetable Guy Arcade System Board Mk.II," this is the Phoenix Sound System 2. For this fictional system, there are now 8 wavetable channels with two noise generators, and the PCM channels have been upgraded output a rate of 32000Hz. This is done in Furnace using two PC Engine systems, and hiding two of the channels on one of them, with four Generic PCM DAC systems set to 32000Hz at 16-bits. I also imagine the Phoenix Sound System 2 to be backwards-compatible with its predecessor (which will map the wavetable channels from 2 to 7). I decided to explore this fictional system by rearranging this song originally created by VinsCool, mainly inspired by Tobikomi's cover of it.
What is Io?
Io is one of four moons that orbit Jupiter, and is one of its largest along with Europa. Io is slightly larger than Earth's moon (about one-quarter in diameter), is the most volcanically active in the entire solar system (so much so that there are lakes of molten silica on its surface), and has a very thin atmosphere (primarily sulfur dioxide, which on Earth is sometimes used to preserve dried food). Spacecraft have either done flybys (Voyager and Cassini) or observations of it while orbiting Jupiter (Galileo), and New Horizons observed it on its route to Pluto in 2007. (Info prior to this sentence from NASA's website). To me, images I've seen of it look pretty cool, with its nice warm colors of yellows, browns, and some red spots (likely volcanoes) on its surface.

My first ever revisit of a non-chiptune song I made before making chiptunes in February 2016. This song was originally made in an iPad app called "Medly Music Maker" some time in 2016. In early 2017, I ported the song over to the Game Boy using DefleMask. These versions of the song are in my channel, though they are unlisted, but they will be linked at the end of this description. I decided to revisit this song in Furnace by completely transforming the feel of the song with my current style. In my original version of Your Idea Glows Bright, I actually used melodies taken from my other songs at the time I originally made it, so I focused more on the unique melodies for this revisit.
What is the Phoenix Sound System 1? This is a fictional audio system I devised in 2018 with the name of "Wavetable Guy Arcade System Board," using a combination of the HuC6280 and SegaPCM with two instances of DefleMask and VGMMerge to hear the result. As most of you know, I revisited this setup earlier this year in Furnace, and it allows you to combine different audio chips to create some fantasy audio system of a gaming console/computer of your own. In a recent update of a development build, the creator of Furnace added a "Generic PCM DAC" system that can be configured to have an output rate between 1000 and 65536Hz and bit depth between 1-bit and 16-bit. With that in mind, I finalized this audio setup as follows: 6 wavetable channels with the last channel capable of producing noise (enabling noise disables wavetable output) and 4 PCM channels with an output rate of 22050Hz at an output bit depth of 16-bit.

Sega Arcade X/Y cover of this well-known song, and my first Sega Arcade X/Y tune to use more than 5 PCM channels (thanks to Furnace supporting all 16 channels of the SegaPCM chip). This cover was started in May, before leaving it for about two months, and then I finished it just last week. I first heard this song in middle school, and I liked the beat of it. It was probably the first 90s tune I liked since my middle school years was when I discovered a bunch of 80s tunes that I enjoyed. Since this song's release in 1993, this song somehow managed to become a meme thanks to a GIF from 2005 made by a YTMND user featuring three guys bobbing their heads, which originated from a 1996 Saturday Night Live sketch of three guys bobbing their heads to the song. The amount of YouTube videos and GIFs resulting from this is endless. When used on YouTube, the guys' heads get replaced with someone else's or that of a character and either this song or a different song is used. I believe TV Tropes calls this a "Mematic Mutation." I may have taken some liberties with my cover of this song.

I previously covered this song in 2017 under my older username of JetStar1997. It was covered at a time when I shifted away from using pulse waves and triangle or sine waves in my PCE covers. I used SpoonyBard's Genesis cover for note reference when I first covered it, but there were some inaccuracies. For one, the arps at the end were completely wrong, so I decided to correct them using the original song imported to FamiTracker using NSFImport to get the correct notes. There was also some sliding action going on with the whistle-like instrument in the original song, so I incorporated that into my revisited cover. I left out one channel in version 1 of my cover, since SpoonyBard also left out one channel on the YM2612 in his cover, so I decided to utilize the extra channel for an echo like how it was in the original version (combined with stereo panning). Finally, I decided to go for WSG+Noise percussion rather than sampled percussion. Version 1 of this cover was done in DefleMask, and I revisited it in Furnace. Revisiting this cover in the latter, I decided to use some features exclusive to Furnace, such as noise macro (which makes WSG+Noise percussion possible without using speed 1 or tempo shenanigans), panning macro, and a stereo panning effect command that is also exclusive in Furnace. All in all, this revisited version took only a few hours to finish in one day.

"Dreamliner" is the name of a widebody jetliner manufactured by Boeing. Making its first flight in 2009, it represented a new era in long-haul air travel. The Boeing 787 was the first jetliner to be made mostly with composite materials (any jetliner before the 787 was made primarily with sheets of metal, mostly aluminum and steel), and its engines feature what looks like teeth, which reduces engine noise. The 787 also uses electrical systems extensively, replacing something called "bleed air" used in preceding jetliners (The "bleed air" basically takes takes the compressed air from the jet engine and uses it for cabin pressurization and other stuff inside an airplane).
This song uses melodies taken from a PC Engine sketch I made in 2018, albeit with the notes changed to match the C minor natural scale. Speech synth voices done with the really old program "Talk It!" Just getting further acquainted with the audio capabilities of the FM Towns system by porting another PC-98 BambooTracker tune. Something about the combination between the crispiness of the YM2612 FM and the "lo-fi" samples of the RF5C68 (the amount of which takes up 63kb out of 64kb for this song) make for an interesting combo that makes me like this system more. If anything, I could include Sega PSG and probably do something with the Sega Mega CD audio system, which features the similar RF5C164 sample chip, but that will be later. Soon, I might make either an original or revisit an old original mine on combination of chips.
Taking a suggestion from a user, I decided to use my intros only for when I make videos with Plotagon Story featuring my blue alien persona. Let me know what you think if you prefer that I upload songs without my intro so you can listen to such stuff rught away.

Another FM Towns tune I decided to do. This song was originally composed by rigid_atoms for the PC-98 using BambooTracker. As the PC-98 is known Japanese computer, I thought it be fitting to port it to another Japanese computer, in this case the Fujitsu FM Towns. As Furnace is incompatible with BambooTracker's instrument format (.bti), I decided to recreate the patches used in the original song manually in Furnace. As you know, both the YM2608 and YM2612 have the same FM capabilities (as the latter is a cut-down version of the former). But, since the FM Towns has an 8-channel PCM chip (RF5C68), I decided to use sampled percussion and use sampled melodic instruments in place of the SSG channels in the original. This freed up one extra FM channel on the YM2612. I decided to utilize the extra FM channel for doubling up on instruments or for an extra echo channel. Like the SNES audio system, the RF5C68/RF5C164 soundchip has 64kb of space to store its samples, and the samples I used here take up 62kb of space (though I believe bankswitching is possible, unless I am mistaken). After the Fujitsu FM Towns, I believe it be fitting to port this song to the either the MSX (AY/YM+any additional chip that it was paired with during its lifetime), Sharp X1 Turbo (YM2149+YM2151), or Sharp X68000 (YM2151+OKI MSM6258), which are the other known Japanese computers (though I pretty much doubt that rigid_atoms would want this song to become the next FamiCommodore or El Diego).
I decided to record the tracker view with the oscilloscope for all channels because there was a bug in exporting all channels to .wav; the program will stop after rendering FM channel 3 (in extended mode), and will just stay there forever. I have brought this up with tildearrow (Furnace creator), and he'll address it soon. If you're interested, join the Furnace Discord server here: discord.com/invite/EfrwT2wq7z

What is the FM Towns? This is a Japanese personal computer that was manufactured by Fujitsu between 1989 and 1997. Contrary to what you might think, the "FM" in "FM Towns" stands for "Fujitsu Mirco." This computer system uses a YM2612 and a Ricoh RF5C68, making 14 channels in addition to playing streamed CD audio. These audio capabilities is like that of the Sega Mega-CD minus the PSG chip. Fujitsu also made a home console version of this computer called the "FM Towns Marty" between 1993 and 1995. I covered this song from the DOS game One Must Fall: 2097 mainly to try out the recently added Ricoh RF5C68/RF5C164 audio chip in Furnace. This is an 8-channel PCM chip similar to the S-SMP in the SNES, though without any echo or filtering effects. Quite an interesting combination, as I might make more music with the Ricoh PCM chip. Furnace is getting closer to having SNES support.

I originally wrote this song on the same system in DefleMask back in July 2018. I decided to revisit this song in Furnace and take advantage of FM macros and negative octaves. I was recently inspired by the crazy stuff VerboSine does in his Genesis/Mega Drive covers and go a step further than what I did in couple of my recent Sega Genesis/Mega Drive originals. I rewrote this song in the key of D# Aeolian (minor natural), and based it on the second half of the original version. In my original version of Stereotactics, the song tries to live up to its own name with the use of a wide stereo effect on the chords and echo panning on some of lead instruments, though to be fair to my 2018 self, I only had a basic understanding of how to use the stereo panning. Here, I decided to go a little crazy with the stereo panning. This is also my first tune since October 2018 where I used SSG-EG to make a robotic voice (I tried to make it say "Stereotactics"). I may have also gotten inspiration from Genatari's Genesis/Mega Drive stuff as well.

I stumbled upon this song recently when watching a video from TASer Masterjun3. They linked the song in the description of the video. It is a custom SMW tune originally made by Red&Green in 2019. While I'm no longer into custom SMW tunes as I was in 2014, I did like the vibes this one had, as well as its use of the uncommon time signature of six-beats-per-measure. For my cover, I decided to cover it using the YM2610B in Furnace. Read the description of this video on my second channel to learn about the YM2610B: youtu.be/1w98DneI2Io. When covering the song, I decided to use the ADPCM-B channel to play single melodic samples instead of sampled chords, as well as playing a looped sound effect of wind blowing in the trees (chirping bird sound effects on the ADPCM-A channels complete the forest feel of this cover). Source of this sound effect can be found here: youtu.be/jSQ2sLhTcvY

Cover of a song that plays when Mario and company go through the first part of Smithy's weapons factory in Super Mario RPG. Very first Mega Drive song I've done in Furnace. Also, one of the percussive instruments I used here is played in a negative octave (Furnace allows negative octaves, whereas DefleMask doesn't. It's useful for FM chips).

What is the FM Sound Expander Cartridge? This was a cartridge for the Commodore 64 and 128 that has a YM3526 (OPL) chip, the predecessor of the YM3812 (OPL2) chip. While similar to its successor, the chip only has sine waves for all nine channels. The FM Sound Expander Cartridge has a cartridge pass-through port for any C64 game to be inserted, which any game could possibly take advantage of the YM3526 chip. It also has an audio pass-through for mixing with the internal SID chip. Unfortunately, no C64 game ever supported the FM Sound Expander Cartridge.
I created this cover to basically try out the YM3526 in Furnace. This chip and the SID seem to be a great combination. Furnace does allow you to set an arbitrary frequency and even effects commands for the chip's percussion mode, which I decided to also try. Like with the song I uploaded before this one, the module will be available once the final version of Furnace 0.6 is released, as I used a development build for this cover.

After a month of not being able to make an original song because of a health issue I was facing, I found time to make one! I consider this my first "true" Neo Geo tune, as I used a development build of Furnace that implements the missing ADPCM-B channel of the YM2610. All my previous YM2610 songs I could consider Neo Geo CD tunes, since that console doesn't have it's RAM connected to the aforementioned channel. With the ADPCM-B channel, the number of sequenced samples I use can be greatly reduced as I can use the channel for any sample chords or whatever other pitched sample I want to use there.

This song is my entry for Volume 6 - Dreams and Duets held by Chiptunes4Autism in 2021. I don't know about you, but whenever I go to sleep and start dreaming, random things happen to the point where it becomes nonsensical. This song is about the recurring randomness that happens in my dreams. Many times, a thing happens where I would either be looking at an online video/movie/TV show in my dream, and then I would be transported into wherever said video/movie/TV show is set in. Anything involving water (whether it would be me suddenly swimming in it, being surrounded by it, or a rainstorm that becomes so intense that it starts flooding rapidly) is also another recurring thing in my dreams. Sometimes, it would feel like the fabric of time and space breaks itself in my dreams, and that's just how my dreams are. This song starts off with me already being in my dream, and things seem convincing at first. As the song progresses, I would begin to notice that things aren't as they seem. Soon enough, the aforementioned nonsense stuff happens, and I'll just end up going through that to see what would happen. The song ends like something sudden happened in my dream that would make me wake up.
I believe this is the first time I visualized an FM song with FM channel three split into two "channels," which is done using its extended mode. I used algorithm 4, which allows it to be used as two 2op "channels." This could only be done by exporting the files from DefleMask-Legacy (which I used to create the song). The side effect of doing this is that each channel appears to make some kind of clicky sound at several points (noticeable at the end when the instruments fade out), though it's not heard when all channels are unmuted.

Cover of the song "Jet Pack Adventure," from the 2008 Nintendo DS game Club Penguin: Elite Penguin Force, which is based on the now-defunct MMO game Club Penguin. This song was reused in the sequel (Herbert's Revenge) for the grappling hook mini-game, and is a rearrange of the song used in said MMO game. If you're subscribed to my second channel, you may have seen a video I put up where I show you that you can make GBA-eqsue music in Furnace using the SegaPCM chip from the Arcade system and the Game Boy system. As I've mentioned in the description of that video, I'm not the first to use these combination of chips. For this song, I decided to lower the quality of the samples (which I found out that Club Penguin: EPF and its sequel uses tracker music files, specifically XM tracker modules) to represent the quality of the GBA's DirectSound audio chip.

Tubelectric from Jazz Jackrabbit 1 & 2 was one of the first songs I ever covered in DefleMask in 2016 (and, by extension, one of my first ever Sega Genesis covers). Five and three-quarter years later, I decided to revisit this cover again. I decided to base this cover from the version heard in Jazz Jackrabbit 2 (though I do infuse elemets from the prequel game at one point), thus the samples come from those used in that game. In Furnace, I decided to combine the HuC6280 from the PC Engine system and the SegaPCM from the Arcade system. This chip combination comes from a thought I once had in 2018 about a sound hardware for a fictional arcade system. At the time, I used two instances of DefleMask, an external tool for getting the correct values for the sample pitches, and VGMMerge to hear how it would sound. I thought it sounded interesting, but the process to get there was quite annoying. Now, with Furnace, all of that in-between stuff is practically eliminated, and I can enjoy doing something my 2018 self would probably appreciate. This also finalizes the fictional sound hardware I thought of in 2018: six wavetable channels+one noise generator (which disables the sixth channel) and four PCM channels. Each channel can do full stereo panning, with sixteen values for the left and right outputs.
I think a horizontal stereo split works better than a vertical split for songs that use more than six channels, but let me know what you folks think if you want to see the stereo action of any song I make.

Arcade cover of Ice Wind from the DOS game Zone 66, the Sound Blaster version (as the Gravis UltraSound version has a different song). All samples used come from said version of the song. I created this cover in yet another recent chiptune tracker called Furnace. This tracker, created by tildearrow, has all the systems found in DefleMask, thus it's compatible with DMF modules (though the program does have its own native module format), but it does have some additional systems not present in DefleMask and is freeware (though it should not be considered an alternative to DefleMask). I covered this song to try out the sample looping and sample pitch control features in Furnace, which is quite nifty as DefleMask requires you to use effect command 20xx to change sample pitch and it doesn't do sample loops. The samples unfortunately adhere to Amiga limitations (as its one of the systems Furnace has), though this might change in a future release as the tracker is still in beta. If you want to check out this tracker, here is its GitHub page: github.com/tildearrow/furnace

It's been a good three and half years since I last made an original song on the Atari POKEY chip. Like my Famicom song Electrical Interference, I wanted to bring my experimental style over to the Atari POKEY. I used a technique courtesy of VinsCool that makes it possible to play a filtered instrument at the same time as a non-filtered instrument, which also alters its pulse width. I actually started this song in June 2021, but I left it sitting for a while, and I decided to pick it up again in January 2022. By then, VinsCool released a new version of Raster Music Tracker (an Atari POKEY music tracker) that addresses issues regarding tuning and a whole new look for the tracker (among other stuff). That was the version I used to complete the song, as I started this song in RMT v1.30.

Happy new year folks! Starting off 2022 in my channel is this OPL3 cover of "Deep Castle (Inside Bowser)" from the Nintendo DS game Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. OpenMPT recently had an update where it can now log OPL3 register dumps to VGM, VGZ, and DRO, so I decided to try it out. This takes out the extra steps that were necessary in the VGM log hack of a previous version of OpenMPT. However, like the aforementioned OpenMPT hack, when you export your songs to VGM and VGZ (not sure about DRO), whatever instrument plays first will end up in the earliest channels regardless of which channel you placed it in the tracker. Audio was rendered with the in_vgm plugin in XMPlay with the Nuked-OPL3 emulation core.
Since we're in the new year, what are some things you're forward to in 2022?

This is the sequel to a Genesis song I made in 2019, which itself was a sequel to an Amiga song I made in 2018. I didn't create one for 2020 since we all know how that year went down. As 2021 comes to a close, let's reflect the stuff we did this past year. 2021 marks the year when I finally fulfilled my dream of composing music for a game! I won't give you the details on what this game is, but what I will tell you is that it is a well-known video game classic with a twist. I also composed music for a Genesis music compilation last year, which was then put on a cartridge and released this year (which I got mine for free).

This is a special cover. It's my first ever cover collab. I collaborated with Uhrwerk Klockwerx on this one. It's a song from the 2001 GBA game Spyro: Season of Ice. It's an isometric platformer, and it was one of the first two Spyro games (along with Enter the Dragonfly) to not be developed by Insomiac Games (You read that right, folks. Before they brought out Ratchet & Clank in 2002, they were the ones who introduced the world to Spyro the Dragon in 1998). The game is apparently an alternate sequel to the original Spyro trilogy that came out on PSX, involving Spyro releasing fairies from different realms before defeating an enemy called Grendor. The game had mixed-to-average reviews, and spawned a sequel in 2002 with the title "Spyro 2: Season of Flame." The song Uhrwerk chose was Market Mesa, particularly because of its drumloop. I used GBAMusRiper in order to extract the samples that made up the drumloop, and use it on the YM2612. We combined our styles of covering, taking advantage of what both chips on the Sega Genesis offers. I had a lot of fun in my first ever cover collab. Here is his upload of the same cover: youtu.be/Kn6ajCjVnOg

I started this cover before covering Ground Man's Stage (Rockman & Forte) on the same chip just around a month ago. I initially abandoned it because I thought I wasn't satisfied with the sound design. However, after stepping away from from it for some time, I decided that it sounded decent enough for what's possible with the OPLL (at least when using the percussion mode). I don't know if anyone else has ever made a song with this chip in which both the melodic and rhythm mode are activated/deactivated within the song. As such, the percussion instruments are lumped in with the last three FM channels, with two percussion instruments sharing the same slot in the oscilloscope. This cover supplements my cover of the song's sequel, which I covered last year: youtu.be/wYwII-08Ma4

Having heard Fragmare's Atari TIA+DPC cover of this song a while back and the original version recently, I felt like having a go at covering this song. I used samples different to those heard in the original song. A great song from the Amiga and DOS era of home computers. One of the FM patches I used comes from the Sega Genesis version of Sunsoft's Batman.

I haven't covered an Alberto Gonzalez song on PC Engine since February 2017. At that time, most of my PC Engine covers sounded like Famicom but on steroids. Thus, for this cover, I made use of more interesting wavetables, including a recreation of the wavetable bass used in the original song (as well as the filter waves I've liked using since covering Stickerbush Symphony back in 2019). I also decided to apply panbrello here, like I usually do with my FM synth songs. As the HuC6280 has full stereo panning instead of hard panning, I like how the echo sounds here. This game's protagonist seems to only protect his front upper body with some kind of armor plate, and nothing else for his head, arms, back, and shoulders. Other than the Konami's Contra, which other game do you know of that features a walking shirtless male protagonist? Anyway, with that aside, I liked hearing this song when I decided to discover more of Alberto's songs I haven't heard yet, which is what led to me covering this song on PC Engine.

I made this song last year for YM2020, the sequel to YM2017 hosted by Catskull Electronics. The theme for this: It's the 90s, and you won a new game for your Genesis/Mega Drive console from a sweepstakes. Having followed its development, you were amazed at the graphics, music and gameplay, and you got to be the first to play the game before it got released into the store shelves. For my entry, I imagined an OutRun-inspired game with a futuristic theme involving hover racing cars and a techno soundtrack. Thus, I composed this lenghty song that loops back at a certain point. When I composed this song back in October 2020, my inspiration mainly came from the soundtracks to Ridge Racer 1, Ridge Racer 2, and Rave Racer (all Namco arcade racer games released between 1993 and 1995). The song length is as such since OutRun and games inspired by it feature quite lenghty songs instead of a 40 second to 1 minute tune that loops. This tune features the extended channel 3 bass+percussion I briefly experimented with in mid to late 2020, and is also my first song to use the uncommon time signature of seven-beats-per-measure. I had lots of fun composing for YM2020, and I'm looking forward to receiving my first ever music album cartridge that was offered to the submitters for free! By the way, the name of this song shouldn't be confused with MegaRace (a survival racing game that was released on DOS, 3DO, and Sega CD in 1993 and 1994).
This is also my first video to feature a new intro I made.
