Making a Simple Late 15thC cap, with my Costube 21 Q&A! Miss Philomena 2021-06-23 | Hey everyone! Today I'm answering the Costube 21 Questions, and making a simple late 15th century cap! Here's a bit more info for the cap, if you want to give this style a try yourself:main piece: 21"x13" / 53cmx34cm PLUS HEMStwo ties: 17"x3" / 43cmx7.5cm PLUS HEMSmeasurements are approximateMy linen is a medium weight, so I used 3/8" or 1cm for my double turned hems, but a finer fabric could take a narrower hem.Hem all the edges, attach the straps diagonally out at the corners on one of the long sides. Gather the center 9" / 23cm of that same long edge, then sew the back seam shut from the center of the gathers down to about 1" / 2.5cm before where the straps attach. And that's it! To wear, put the cap on and cross the straps over in the back. Bring them around to the top of your head and either tie in a decorative knot, or wrap them around each other and tuck the ends in. There’s a LOT of whip stitching in this reticule. This is from a book published in 1831, with minimal directions and no pattern. Mine is slightly larger than the dimensions in the book, but I wanted to make sure I could fit everything important in it. This is part of my 1840s project. One Day Costuming Challenge: An Edwardian Corset Cover with a Handmade Lace Yoke Miss Philomena 2020-06-23 | A while back Kirilee Cosplay ( youtube.com/channel/UCI9N4A_1RCzdytqtF-e_nrg ) issued a challenge, to make a costume in one day. So I did all my making and sewing and most of my filming back in May, while my state was still under stay-at-home orders. But when it came to modeling my finished piece, I kept putting it off and putting it off, until finally, a month later, I gave up and tossed it on my dressform for finished shots. Yay procrastination! The book mentioned comes from the amazing APL site ( antiquepatternlibrary.org ), which is a huge collection of scanned 19th and early 20th century public domain crafting books. They have lots and lots of different categories, and while most of the books are in English, there are also French and German publications as well. And possibly other languages, but those are the only other two I recall seeing. You can find the Priscilla Yoke Book here ( antiquepatternlibrary.org/html/warm/6-GO001.htm ), and see the preview for the full pages, as well as a link to the PDF which you can download. The book features mostly crocheted patterns, but there are some for tatting, as well as a couple that incorporate tapes and trims, including wide rickrack! Mini-Make: A Fabric Head Form for Hats and Wigs Miss Philomena 2020-06-09 | Join me as I sew a head form!The pattern I used can be found here: http://lynnmcmasters.com/Head.htmlA couple notes about the head form, that I didn't realize until after finishing this video: -I put a lot of stuffing in, but I probably could've added more.-Because I used cardboard for the base instead of wood, the head form has very little weight to it. That means it's easy to make it top heavy, which I discovered while resetting a curled hairpiece! I'll be making a few more of these for display at an event in the fall, so while I don't plan to do anything to this one, I will for future head forms add some kind of weight just above the cardboard, to better stabilize it.
