This is my contribution a collaborative project for Make It Matter, an effort to help those in need by raising money for charities across the world (in this case, autism awareness). Safety Pin: Make one out of wood! DIY (Quickie #8) Wood n Stuff w/ Steve French 2017-01-05 | Let's make a safety pin out of wood! Inspired by one an old knifemaker friend gave me many years ago, this wooden safety pin is a fun and easy woodworking project. A great curiosity item to impress your friends and woo the women or men, whichever you seek (your mileage may vary). Let me show you how to make this awesome novelty!The pin is make from rattan reed (sold as "diffuser reeds" for scented essential oils) and the clasp is made from maple salvaged from a shipping crate. You can make the clasp from any find grained hardwood. But - for best results - the pin body really needs to be rattan.The mandrel I used to wrap the spring is a stainless steel chop stick that measures just under 1/4" diameter. Any similarly sized metal or plastic rod - such as a size 10 (6mm) knitting needle - will work. Avoid using a wooden dowel because you need to leave the rattan on the rod until it dries fully and a wooden dowel might swell and crush the rattan flat.Don't wrap the spring too tightly or too quickly. You don't want to crush the rattan flat or the spring will be weaker. If the rattan cracks, you didn't soak it long enough. If it flattens out easily, you've soaked it too long. It's based on an Anna White plan ( http://ana-white.com/2012/05/plans/birthday-seesaw ) but I made it even more durable by adding 6 extra parts that I feel should have been included in the original plans. I also shaped the seats to make them more friendly to small legs. I used Titebond III glue. Last night (Valentine's eve) I realized that I still needed a gift and card. So I got to work and made my wife this candy dish. It serves as a gift and a card. Done and done!The ficus branch used is from a tree that meant a lot to my wife. It was grown from a sapling that belonged to her late mother. After her death, the tree (which was in a pot at the time) was rescued and planted in the back yard where my wife lived at the time. We've long since left that home but, luckily, I had the idea to cut off a branch to take with us. I've made her a couple of things now from this wood and there's enough to make several more things in the future.Obviously, this could be made in any shape that one might want. Conceived by professional magician Steve Somers (The Amazing Teacher youtube.com/user/TheAmazingTeacher ) and designed and built by myself, "Visual Foo" is capable is producing a large live rabbit, multiple doves or whatever else one chooses from an empty box.This video is a "pre-demo". At some point I will be making an actual demo video for the sake of promoting this product for sale to the professional magic community. But I first have to finish adding the cosmetic paint touches to the prop and stand. The stand (painted) will be available as a separate item and may appear as a build video.I will NOT be making a build video for this project. We began with a 2x4 foot piece of a sheet good of our choice. Each of us added one cut to the "cut list". In some respect, this is like the Scrap Bin Challenge a bunch of us did recently; only we all start with the exact same sized 'scraps'.We also each added a hardware item or two to the list of permitted items we may use. At least two items from the list must be used somehow in your build. In the build, reasonable substitutions may be made. For example, a larger or small diameter PVC pipe may be used, or twine instead of rope.
