So I've been wanting to make a video like this for a while as I've always had a soft spot for old MIDI music.
It started when I played a bunch of 90's shooters when I was a teen but gradually moved into downloading a bunch of MIDI covers of popular rock / metal songs. There's something I find so fun, interesting and even quaint about breaking down an already well-established song into a simple format like MIDI. Almost like creating a new song entirely, the better term for it would be a remix really but I digress.
I've noticed that while there are a few MIDI uploads on YouTube, they can be annoying to search for or just don't have much outreach. So with this video I thought it'd be fun to compile a bunch of MIDI's into one big compilation for easy digestion and enjoyment.
I thought it'd be easier to separate this next part into a minor FAQ to help organise things better.
Q. Where did you source these MIDI's?
A. I want to stress first the following - NONE OF THESE MIDI WERE MADE BY ME. I've collected these throughout the past 2-3 years from various sites. Unfortunately, likely due to how old and how far they've been passed around, none of them have any credits attached so I have no idea who to attribute any of them to. If you have any ideas for who was responsible for any of these then do let me know and I'll update the description accordingly.
Q. Why only Nu-Metal?
A. Simple answer really - The time when MIDI creation really peaked (late 90's / early 00's) just coincides with the rise and fall of Nu-Metal itself. So you'll find a load of popular Nu-Metal bands have a ton of MIDI files around the web, compared to most other genres at least. Not that MIDI's for other genres don't exist mind you - I just thought it'd be more fun to stick with a theme. (Plus I just really love Nu-Metal so...)
Q. What's with the quality difference in the MIDI?
A. Given the nature of how MIDI's are created, the quality can range from composition to composition. This is also dependent on the instruments and amount of tracks / stems the creator decides to use. For this video I selected MIDI's that I deemed to be at least "good" representations of the original songs, however you will find that some MIDI's do sound "fuller" than others due to the aforementioned extended usage of more instruments / stems. If you feel that these "simpler" songs are worse or just straight up bad then I do apologise for including them.
Q. Why are these instrumental only?
A. Most MIDI's are usually created as instrumental only. I assume this is the case due to vocal lines not translating 100% well to MIDI instruments, compared to traditional guitar, bass etc. A few of these tracks did originally have MIDI vocals attached (Spineshank, Papa Roach) however for the sake of consistency I elected to remove the vocal track where present, as this only really effected around 3-4 songs in total.
