The pinnacle of homelabbers is the home rack. It means you have enough equipment and projects to dedicate an entire room of your house to the hobby. Congratulations, you did it!
But every homelab needs to start somewhere, but even the most humble of setups need a place to live without annoying everyone who lives with you.
Today, we're building a DIY 8-Bay NAS and Virtualization Server that should be more than enough to run homelab services, and be quiet enough to keep in the house.

One of my favorite motherboards from 2023 was the Erying 11900H ES, with it's 8-core Tiger Lake mobile CPUs. As fast and efficient as Tiger Lake was, Raptor Lake is better in every way. 10729's latest Raptor Lake Mobile motherboard features a 14-Core 13900H ES CPU, along with an unlocked turbo timer, offering top-flight performance for less than 100W of power.

I've tested what feels like dozens of Enterprise GPUs inside my Cloud Gaming Server, but Nvidia's Pascal series has been prohibitively expensive until very recently. The Tesla P100 has fallen from $1000 to just $165 in the last few months, which means it's time to see what it can do.

When hardware deals sound too good to be true, they usually are. This is the AsRock Rack 4U12G BC-250, a 12-Node server stuffed to the gills with Zen 2 Cores and RDNA2 graphics... It's the same APU that powers the Playstation 5, so surely it should be able to play games, right?

Does the Threadripper 2970WX still have what it takes to be a competent workstation in 2024? I sure hope so, because Rett is expecting this system to last for the next 10 years. And the InWin Dubili will probably outlive us both.

A classic Rum Cocktail in the Swizzle! Mix 1/2 fresh lime, a barspoon of Honey and 4 dashes bitters into a glass and stir well. Pour that into a Collins glass filled with crushed ice. Add 2oz of Spiced Rum and a few pinches of granulated sugar. Then... Swizzle! Garnish with a lime wheel, strawberries, mixed berries, or any other fruit you desire. This is the definition of a dangerous rum drink.

The QuantaPlex T22HF is a two-node server I picked up on eBay for just $500, and it's been one of the most frustrating systems I've ever worked with. Zero documentation or resources, and it seems few people who watch my channel have ever had hands on with them. Can it be turned into a decent homelab box, or should I have left this one alone?

The Minisforum MS-01 is one of the most talked about and requested products for me to take a look at in quite some time. Inside this tiny little box, there's an Intel Core i9-13900H 14-Core Raptor Lake CPU, DDR5 Memory, 3x m.2 NVMe slots, 2x 2.5GbE AND 2x 10Gb SFP+ for Networking, and a full Desktop PCI Express slot for expandability. I'm no stranger to odd keyboards, whether it be unique layouts, cramped netbooks, iPad touchscreens, I've daily driven them all. Which is why I'm so frustrated by the XPLUS VickyBoard and its Alice layout... it combines the split-design of an ergonomic keyboard, but compromises it in every way with wild key spacing and aligned columns. Proxmox and Intel's Hybrid "big/LITTLE" architecture... the great debate continues. New discoveries and tests have prompted a second video on the subject, and trust me, you're going to want to watch this one.
Microcode Install Instructions: 1) Install Proxmox 8.1 2) Add non-free-firmware to debian repo in sources.list - Edit the /etc/apt/sources.list file. Add non-free-firmware to the 1st line so it looks like this--- - deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian bookworm main contrib non-free-firmware 3) Save Changes 4) #apt clean && apt update 5) #apt install intel-microcode - The current version Debian has in the repo is 3.2023114.1~deb12u1 6) Reboot, and the microcode patch should apply automatically. 7) You can check what microcode you are running after reboot by # grep 'stepping\|model\|microcode' /proc/cpuinfo

In a recent video, I criticized Intel for their decision to remove Efficiency Cores from their Xeon E-2400 Lineup. BUT, you all pointed out the reason was likely the lack of support for Hybrid CPU architectures in VMware. I don't know if you're aware, but other Hypervisors exist, especially in the SMB market. Today, I'm testing out Proxmox with Intel's big/LITTLE CPUs, thanks to a pair of Erying motherboards purchased from AliExpress.

One of the worst kept secrets in recent history is finally on my desk, with nVidia launching the RTX 4070 Super this week. At $599, it features 20% More CUDA cores than the RTX 4070, and according to nVidia, is faster than an RTX 3090.
But, boisterous claims aside, I wanted to find out if we finally have the perfect candidate to upgrade your high end GTX 1080 or RTX 2080 GPU. There hasn't been a GPU under $1000 to get excited about since before 2020, and owners of high end 10 and 20 series cards have been searching for an upgrade path. Is the 4070 Super the GPU you've been looking for, or should you just move along?

Like any homelab, my server rack is in a constant state of flux... equipment being moved around, servers being added and removed, but what do I actually use my server rack for? What hardware can I not live without? How much does it cost to run my server rack for a year? All of this and more will be answered in this latest tour of my Homelab.
Small form factor GPUs are a thing of the past. These days, GPUs are pushing 4 slots tall, and like Pontiac in the 90s, it seems wider is better. The RTX 4000 Ada Generation SFF is a professional card that challenges every concept of what makes a graphics card worth buying, and crams it all into a half height, half length package that draws only 70W of power. This thing is absolutely insane, and delivers unmatched power/L in your system.
