SM64 PSR - Chain Chomps Star 159 (TAS)
updated
I haven't uploaded or TAS'd in like what... 4 years?
Was super bored yesterday so I felt like improving an old TAS from 6-7 years ago, wanted to try out the improved tools and dang they are really cool, especially that automatic .99x for BLJ.
I wanted to complete the 103 star TAS for this and I think I got around 20 or so stars in, but I lost motivation entirely for TASing in general so I never got to complete it. Seeing it nowadays, including the WIP, it just looks so bad I feel too unsatisfied to continue from that .m64 so I guess if I were to finish it I have restarted it for the 3rd time.
I'm hella washed up, so I don't really know much about QF optimizations and whatever new sm64 tech there is nowadays, but I feel satisfied with this as long as there isn't some very sloppy movement. This isn't vanilla so I don't feel the need to go too ham on optimization.
This is still improvable by a lot, but I just don't have the time and motivation. It is definitely either something to do with somehow finding a better position from the BLJ to the wallkick that is earlier, a better climb from my DR at the shy guy and getting a better position from the switch to walk kick to the top earlier.

Uploaded for fly to see and that I'm still alive I guess. I'm gonna finish this off, not really optimized because I know how terrible all of them are, and don't wanna restart the TAS again for the 3rd time lol.
Only ones I did recently are the last 2.
btw vanilla is more important

Not a special TAS, just a collab and uploaded for fun.
It's very unoptimized, I'm pretty sure everyone knows where something can be improved lol. Just watch if you're bored and don't expect something too amazing.

Just to say, I started like 48 stars in so I'm late since someone asked if someone was recording. The SGDQ audio syncs up on the bottom left since I was dumb enough to leave the audio for the stream itself running, so I put it there if it does annoy anyone of how off-sync it becomes. The video on the right however, syncs up with mostly 1ted59 and Plush as they were the most ahead.
Aside from that, I placed a grey line on the bottom representing the Discord voice call to show who's the one talking since pannenkoek2012 surmised he didn't know anyone's voice (other than Plush), and it's best for anyone who's never heard any of these guys voices.
Spent like 4 days editing the peoples voices, and will add in subtitles later on.
I'm aware there may be some tiny things missing or mistakes where someone said something or it just wasn't them, like Charcoal saying "I agree" at 0:42, but fixes will be included in subtitles. It can also be that I just never knew who was talking at that certain point so I left it as "?" or empty. (Not all people in VC talked btw, or talked before 48 stars.)

-1f, the save is just landing earlier than Eru. I had to actually turn the analog stick more a bit to the right, because the angle I have will never get you to buttslide on the platform. It does not waste any frames, because they all reach the same location at the same frame. It does waste a frame if I held it just 1 or something inputs to the right.

Sub 30 seems possible, maybe with a bit fixing with my idle walking. It was annoying from that angle since I barely had enough time to get the needed angle, and usually I would end up hitting a slope somehow in the PU. Hopefully that camera angle doesn't make console crash, if it does I'll be sad and I guess you'd have to do the BLJ from the top lol.

Not much to say, simple stars to TAS. I think Star 1 you can do a GWK on the wall to save time, but gl. Star 2, if you can jump with a lot of speed so Mario falls faster, that's a way to improve it.
I don't know the name of this area and these stars so I just took it from Caleb's video.

Fixed this lazy TAS, since it annoyed me about me not thinking about just skipping the slide. I don't know if the first 130 stars TAS will be bljless or with blj but I'll be making bljless TASes and also with BLJ if they have it to save time.
I included a comparison at the end of the video because I wanted to waste time and I had nothing to do, so enjoy it I guess. xd

Nothing too special, just what you'd expect.
Honestly, I don't even know how to optimize a slide level so I just did what I could so I don't feel fully satisfied with it. Everything before was okay, maybe I could've been able to get -300 and hit the spindrift to enter the warp faster, or maybe there could be an even faster route to there. I just wanted to TAS something so here you go lol

(The one in the video is 11"53!)
This one was annoying to TAS, since it was either you flew right through everything or your speed just immediately drops because of the wind that makes mario fly up. I just suddenly found this BLJ out and theorizing that it would be faster and of course it is. This BLJ is most likely useful for another star.

Really easy star to TAS. Had a different strategy but found out this was faster. The gate where the star in is weird, but you need at least -400+ speed to clip in for some reason. I wasn't able to get in with less than -400.

Sub 30 is definitely possible. Most of the improvement was moving during the animation. I didn't compare the other parts, but I'll do that later.
I'll be making tons more TASes of this hack since I love it and it's a really nice one. Hopefully I will get into the 130 stars team for this if I keep optimizing stars lolol

This is just a small TAS so I don't go inactive again.
My next objective is going to try to improve Dennis' Climbing up the Wall in 16"00 TAS to see if I can get 15"7x. If I were to get 15"77, I just needed to find some place to save 7 frames!
1f save is definitely possible using different RNG to make that goomba farther, as he wasted 1f otherwise he would've jump kicked the goomba instead.

LUL finally finished it after 3 days of TASing. Had motivation to TAS this one but also hated it because of what Kaze did if Toad reached a speed of 15. Made bowser fights so hard... At least it allowed some TAS exploits. xd
There's some more ideas I have to improve this TAS, but I don't wanna re-TAS this again tbh.
This beats TimeTravelPenguin's time of 5'15"92: youtube.com/watch?v=gHP9aAeMU_s

Path of the Tarfall has been improved to 11"7!
All these 3 stars are improvements from TTP's TASes (and 9Redfly if you count him since TTP improved his TAS)
Their channels:
TTP: youtube.com/channel/UCUMWpmbkD0HvkgFC0BqrTFw
9Redfly: youtube.com/channel/UCl4IbQa43142uUYydwLXm3Q
The 4th star is pretty much an idea, but I think it could be 2x faster because the ending is slower. It's kinda hard to get the correct speed and height, but I just went with whatever I got.
Another thing that could be improved is just that jump dive where I slide for like 5 dust frames and could be replaced for something else, but I needed it to get into position for the BLJ.
The Switch Run Over the Tar star's ending could be improved and done like what TTP did since I think the way I did it is way slower, but I don't want to spend another 30 minutes because Mario doesn't want to get enough height to go across..

I feel bad for SammerZ, since he could've gotten first if he got his 5th bob-omb to explode. I could've saved some frames if I longed jumped off the cliff a couple frames earlier, since it exploded. I kicked the 4th bob-omb because if I just kept going straight, the 5th bob-omb would get deactivated as I long jumped off the cliff by then already, and Mario gets too far. gg syntax though

I completely forgot to upload this, my bad. :P
Aside from that, it's an okay task but I'm liking task 6 as it seems to fit my interest more. I could've gotten 5th but I don't know how Non5en5e demolished me even though our strat was so similar. But the angle he went in was probably the time saver since I walked a couple frames to land directly in the water in the end.
Just uploaded this 'cause I haven't TASed anything in a while so I'm a little rough, and showing omar something.
If anyone has any ideas to improve this beginning, then say it (especially the end).
This is the beginning for me and omar's 5 star TAS, following this route...

I literally TASed this in like 1-2 hours, so it's unoptimized and rushed. I thought I was going to be last because of my time, but turns out I wasn't.
Hey, at least I beat TTP. :3
(hes a scrub)
- You can't collect the metal cap before killing the 5 goombas and collecting the 5 1-ups.
- You can kill the goombas or collect the 1-ups in any order, as in, you don't have to kill all the goombas then collect all the 1-ups.
- Please make sure your .m64 starts before you die on Bowser fight.

Got 5th. ugh if only I didn't keep the cannon closed like that. :p Also had the same idea beginning as gohan, but I couldn't get it to work so gg lol.
Btw Pannenkoek had the best submission. :D

EDIT: mkdasher got 20"66
Went to the left as it's faster, like mkdasher said.
Sub 21 is possible, all that needs to be improved is somewhat the beginning and the door to elevator door. Everything else is maxed I think.

Going to try and improve it
11"87 if you round the time.
This is improvable.. But I don't know where. Maybe if someone could find a faster way on the top of the pyramid? Not sure if someone else already TASed this star. :v

So, I finally finished this project I've been working on. It's very unoptimized since there's so many combinations you could do for movement. Literally, the taunt cancel is the perfect trick for making a TAS for this since you could cancel saving, star animations, and gain speed to 48 in ~4 frames. I tried to make it entertaining and a fast time as I could, trust me, TASing 2 controllers at once is hard.
I'll work on a more optimized version till someone makes a TAS route for this, since I used the SM64 16 Stars TAS route for this. (youtube.com/watch?v=sxgfuqvr-Y0 this one)
Tricks I used:
Taunt cancel: What this basically does, when you press D-pad down it causes Mario or Luigi to perform a taunt which makes them sleep, however in this case it can be used to cancel any action or animation being performed. Like cancelling star dance.
Immediately Warp to Lobby:
When Mario and Luigi press L+R+Start at the same time, it returns both players to the lobby. This is very useful for this TAS as it's faster than pressing Start and then exiting the course.
Text Glitch:
When you taunt cancel after reading a sign, it literally cancels collision detection. In this TAS it was useful to use this so I could get to the Shoot to the Blue star faster.
Pyramid Clip:
Where you get the star ontop of the triangle in Shifting Sand Land, when Luigi is standing into a corner, Mario must run under Luigi, and Luigi jumps then he'll be stuck. Once he taunt cancels, he can clip through the pyramid which is faster to hit the bird and then go right in to get the star inside the pyramid. This may be slower than hitting the bird right at the beginning then getting the pyramid star and clipping in, then mario gets the bird star.
Backwards Long Jump (BLJ):
When Mario long jumps, but instead turns the analog stick backwards and is under a ceiling and long jumps backwards again, he will gain negative speed. This can be exploited to get to places faster and clip through things, like the 50 star door or the BLJ in BitFS. I also used 0-input BLJ which gives more speed than a normal BLJ.
MIPS Clip:
You have to use the MIPS clip since Side-BLJ is not allowed in 16 stars. When Mario is infront of the 30 star door, and the bunny is dropped, the bunny will force Mario into the door causing him to clip. In this TAS, Mario was rolling and the bunny pushed Mario and forced him through the door.
And yeah, also sometimes when I immediately warp to lobby, the fade out bugs out or the star suddenly fades out, like at 1:28 and 1:36. It's because I got a star and then the Warp to Lobby trick was used. The game thought I just teleported to lobby to start saving the game, but I didn't so nothing happened after. One trick I forgot was a little Bowser throw trick. When you Taunt Cancel and hold the analog stick at the certain direction, it will throw in that direction. Will save time. I also didn't have the addresses for Luigi, so I was blind on his coordinates and his speed.
Notable mistakes in this run:
Bowser:
- Possibly not first frame grab, but the 1st bowser is probably first frame.
Bowser in the Dark World:
- No first cycle unfortunately.
Bowser in the Sky:
- Instead of the GWK at 6:31, I could just long jump all the way, shown in snark's TAS: youtube.com/watch?v=j1aOTWBxMx8
- The BLJ on the elevator circle thing at 6:50, the angle could be different and changed as it's slow
- The random spam dive is slow af, mistake there.
Shifting Sand Land:
- Pyramid Clip is probably slower.
- I didn't dive one more time to gain Mario and Luigi 48 speed, so they both had ~34 speed which was very slow.
Lethal Lava Land:
- Luigi could of entered the volcano more faster
- Big Bully fight could be more faster since I have Taunt Cancel.
- Pole Climb could be improved up to the star grab, and Luigi could get there faster.
Dire, Dire Docks:
- Lost speed on swim once Luigi teleported to Mario.
- Climbing up the Submarine was very slow.
- Lag occurred while swimming, which affected the VI/s, thus wasting time.
- Could of taunted to go up the tunnel faster.
Other:
- Movement could be improved a ton more.
- At 6:18 I didn't get alot of speed, which resulted in going to Bowser in the Sky slower.
Other than that, I hope you enjoyed this TAS!
And I'm surprised you read the description this far, haha :3
..Unless you skipped to the bottom just to see re-records..

Got this idea from SammerZ: youtube.com/watch?v=Je0HKtQGiIg
Instead of directly flying into the star, hitting the amp is faster. Sub 14 is possible, and I'll go for it.

Here Moronic. (Same sequence as if I was doing it from the blue star door.)
This Z C^ + HSWK, is faster and swaggy. :D I do have another idea to improve, so that it only does 1 Wall-Kick or possibly no HSWK but just one large jump like when Mario is in a corner. Dunno though, just my theories.
Beats Omar's TAS in 13"5: youtube.com/watch?v=4E8NzIvdikI
0:07 is the most improvable part. EDIT: 1 frame is probably savable at the end with proper height.
